It sounds like somebody took two files and spliced them together to make one full length movie. And the player is stopping at the splice. Most likely to me is something to do with the way they were spliced.

Does your external hard drive has its own power supply? The USB port on Philips players doesn't supply enough power for most 3.5" drives.
-
yes it has its own power adapter.so is it because the hard drive have 3 partition? how much time to load the hard drive until it appear on the screen?
-
Plug it in and a message should appear to press the key to select the USB device. My guess is that the problem is the 3 partitions.

ok guys,now it works,just fat32 format,no partition,and play it.thank you.

Hello, I have some .avi files that play without any problems on my PC, but on Philips player, the video plays fine, but the audio does not play right, it sounds like the old chipmunk cartoons, here is a screenshot from Gspot:
And a screenshot from VLC:
Is there any conversion I can do to fix this?
Thank you. -
The 11024 Hz sample rate is probably the problem. An easy fix with VirtualDub:
1) File -> Open Video File...
2) Video -> Direct Stream Copy
3) Audio -> Audio -> Full Processing Mode
4) Audio -> Conversion, 44100 Hz, 16 bit, stereo, high quality
5) Audio -> Compression... MPEG Layer 3, 192 kbps
6) File -> Save as AVI
Depending on what audio encoders you have step 5 may require a different choice. -
Thanks a lot! The instructions were great, step by step, it worked, now the files play perfectly on the DVD player, thanks again.

For those of you in the USA ...
TARGET has the Philips DVP5960 on sale this week (November 11, 2007 thru November 17, 2007) for $59.88 which seems a reasonable price especially since you can get "instant gratification" by picking it up at any TARGET store rather than have to mail-order it etc.
Just thought I'd let everyone know ...

P.S.
Here is a link to it on the TARGET website: CLICK HERE
Please note the item is in the sales circular this week so I would expect TARGET stores to have decent stock on this item (knock on wood)."The eyes are the first thing that you have to destroy ... because they have seen too many bad things" - Lucio Fulci

Does anyone know what is the "Largest" size USB Flash Drive that can played thru the USB on this dvd player.
I have tried 2GB and 4GB successfully ... I wonder if anyone has tried 8GB!?!?
Thanks,

I know of people using 500 GB hard drives so I would assume you could use a similar sized flash drive -- if you could find/afford one. -
Hi Jagabo,
THANKS for your reply. I loved the "PhunkyFish" url that you gave me it has everything.
Also, it answered my question ... I was mainly interested to know how big of USB Flash Drive (with no Power Drive) I could run on the USB ... and it showed me the A-Data 8GB that I am looking at it will run with no issues ... I'll buy it and test it.
I have run a 320GB, FAT32 formatted External Hard Drive with power cord attached ... playing all kind of music and movies.
Thanks again,

Hey guys,
I have a DVP 5982 and a WD Dual-option Combo external hard drive (Model WD1600B011) which has both 2x firewire and 3xUSB ports on it). I have not been able to get this drive to work with the Philips player. The drive is formatted in FAT32 (currently empty) with the partition as primary and active, 160GB with 8MB cache - pic here
I plug the drive into external power, wait a few moments to ensure it's fully operational and plug it into the DVP 5982 without a disc in the drive - almost immediatally I get the "device not recongnized" message.
I'm wondering if anyone has had luck with this combination or not? I'm starting to think due to the extra USB ports (which acts as a HUB) it may not be recongnizing the drive correctly...or perhaps I have a bad USB port on the Philips?
I bought the DVD player at Costco about 5 months ago, and don't have the box, so I'm not sure if they will let me exchange it or not (or if they even have this DVD player anymore)....
P.S. I've tried formatting with both fat32format and swissknife. -
Hi Riley,
I have a 5982 also ... well, I am not no expert ... but, to rule out your "suspicion" that your 5982's USB is not working ... if you have a USB Flash Drive (you know the little thumb-drive) put something on it a .JPG picture (JPEG) and see if it loads up and shows it. If this test goes A-OK then your USB port is OK.
As far as why your WD 160GB is not working. Check with a desktop and make sure that you have 1 Solid Drive ... no partitions ... and in fact you are FAT32. Then put some JPG's or a short .AVI (that is made with XviD or DivX BUT NOT H264) and run your test. BTW, make sure on your 5982 Remote Control you push the USB button ...
It should work.

I just bought one of these DVD players and can confirm that my newly Western Digital 500GB Elements works with the DiVX player.
No problems however I have 2 external HD's. One for my computer and one for my divx player. I went out and bought a USB 7 port hub. Well my PC see's both external HD's but now my DiVX player doesn't see my WD. I am going directly from the hub into my divx player which both HD's are plugged into the USB Hub itself.
But my divx player for some reason my divx player doesn't see my hub.
Any ideas? Can I not use the divx with a usb hub and have to plug my external HD directly into the divx player? -

I have phillips DVP 5960, I ripped dvd (.VOB) to external HD which is formated FAT32. It can play avi files fine but when it played (*VOB) it got jitter with picture and sound. Anyone has experiences with .VOB files.
-
My suspicion is that it an not work with a hub or anything that emulates a hub. It isn't a computer, it is only a standalone player. It doesn't even like more than one fat32 partition.
Anything such as a ripped DVD will have to high a bitrate to play smoothly from a external device due to the speed of the USB port. -
In response to ripping a VOB file to HD, can you do more then one? If so, do you need to have the video_ts folder as well? This is good news for people that want to put VOB files on a external HD.
I have some home videos done from a vacation and would like to try it over my divx player, but their done in VOB. -
The bitrate the DVP-5960 can read over USB is limited to about 4000 kbps. When the bitrate gets over that (and that will happen with most VOB files ripped from DVD) the player will stutter.
You can rip multiple VOB files as a single VOB with DVD Decryptor in IFO mode with file splitting turned off. If your files are already ripped you can use VOB2MPG to join them together into a single MPG file.
FAT32 has a 4 GB file size limit.
If you want to play high bitrate files, large VOB/MPG files off NTFS partitions, VOB/IFO sets, or ISO images, you'll need a player like the Ziova CS505:

Oh, it's the Zensonic players that support NTFS. I don't think the Ziova players do. -
I was looking at some reviews from earlier this year and it appears that unless they've worked them out the CS505 is awkward to use due to the interface. I'm stll looking for a player that does it all easily.
