Well, I ripped Lord of the Rings extended edition and the file is approximately 2.2 gb. I could spit it but I rather not have the pause. It would play files around 1.5 gb just fine.Originally Posted by Goofproof

As an aside how does everyone get swissknife to work?? I have downloaded it twice and when I click on it, it appears to be unpacking itself .. but then nothing else happens?? It doesnt have to be run under DOS? I have tried turning off my anti-virus, I have run it from my boot disc, my data disc and the external usb drive .. no go in each case..or does it have to have net access??

I have downloaded a few versions, they won't work on any of my XP Pro machines, We're just unlucky. Jim

Just use fat32formatter. Its easy and no one has problems with it.

I just wanted to know, because even tho my ICY box is fully compat I was getting some stuttering on a relatively low rate docu.. it shows a star field exploding towards you. This also happened on something else with a river in full flow.. however other stuff plays real good.. I thought a change from fat32 64k chunks to say, fat16 with 4k chunks might cure some problems. Still happy with it tho.

I love my 5960. It's awesome to watch AVIs from my USB onto the 5960.
I use the Sandisk Cruzer 4.0GB Micro USB to watch my AVIs. It works fine until the last 10 seconds of each show/movie I watch. It freezes there for 2-3 seconds and then it catches up to end the show.
Has anyone else experienced this? Is it the DVD player or the USB? -
Hello all,
I just tried to upgrade my 5960/37 player with the latest firmware from philips site but after the upgrade completed and it reset the screen keeps on rolling and is black and white like it is in PAL or something. Is there a setting on the dvd player that puts it to PAL format? Anybody know how I can reset it back so I can at least see the screen? -
I seem to recall that after a firmware update you may need to use the composite output to get the player set up correctly again.

@kewlio,
There've been a couple of posts about the video output not working after a FW update which was resolved after pressing the "HD upscale" button on the front of the unit. I had this problem myself once and this took care of it. It doesn't sound like your problem, since you are getting some video output, but it's worth a shot, if you haven't fixed it already. -
Can anyone confirm whether my Philips 5980 Drive will work with a Western Digital My Book Pro 500gb Drive, before I go and purchase it
Regards

Yea i tried the button on the front.. I had to actually go into the menu, using the manual as a guide since I couldn't see all the screen properly since it was rolling and reset it to NTSC. It works fine now.

I need to raise the power by 500ma, does anyone have schematics or something? I have a part number, but I am not sure which one it is. Let me know, Thanx.

I susupect that the extra 1/2 Amp could overload the power supply. I believe most of us have solved that by using external powered drives.
-
I know, but I want it to look clean. I don't want any extra wires. I am going to add my own 5V circuit in there and hook it up straight to the usb port. If anyone is interested, I will post later in a week to let you all know how it went.
-
I did it. I located the 5VDC supply and ground, cut them and taped them back, and Installed my own 5VDC Power Supply rated at 2.5 Amps. I grabbed a Power Adapter off of Ebay for $5 and broke the plastic casing. Put some friction tape on the bottom, wrapped it in electrical tape, and siliconed it to the bottom of the casing. It took 1 hour, $5, and some tape and silicone. Now I have a DVP5960 that can play any hard drive or flash drive that comes my way. And the best part is that I don't have any ugly extra wires to deal with. If any one needs any assistance, let me know. I also have pics if any one is curious. I am now going to try to do the same thing to my HTS6500 in my bedroom. Even though I already opened it to find there are 4 different 5VDC supplies going to different places. More complicated, but should be doable. I'll post later in about a week to see if anyone is still interested.

will this dvd player play 2.5" hard drives without an external power source? for ex: the wd passport series or the simpletech portable hd series?
-
It should play any compatible external harddisk. Whether you need external/hack the power source, depends on the amount of power that hraddisk need to source from the USB connector.

Since I have received numerous PM's about my work, Here is a list of how to do it plus pictures.
First, what you need are the following:
1. 6 Butt Splices (Or another way to connect wires)
2. Electrical tape
3. Friction Tape (Or any thick Rubber)
4. Silicone
5. Normal electrical tools (VDC Meter, cutter, Stripper, Splicer)
6. 5vdc 2.5A power adapter (Ebay for $6) Ask me who I bought it from.
I can't guarantee that all 5960 are the same, so I don't take any responsibility if you somehow damage your unit. If you somehow would feel safer, I can do it for you for a price. Just let me know.
First, take off the 5 screws on the back, and the two screws off of the sides.
Next, remove the cover by pulling the back up and sliding the cover back.
Now you need to splice into the power wires coming into the unit. (Please make sure power is unplugged)
Strip back as much jacket as possible on the power wires. Cut the wires a couple of inches away from the connector , strip and splice you're new wires (I used the wire from the Adapter, I just cut out a section) into the old wires. Break the casing on the power adapter and splice you're power wires into the adapter (blue and brown wires, my unit didn't matter which was power(same size terminals)).
It is very important that you separate your newly cut secondary wires coming from the adapter. Now strip them back. Plug in your 5960 cable now into the power outlet (don't plug it into you're 5960 unit) and test which wire is going to be the +5vdc and which one is common (ground).
Once you know which one is ground, connect it to pin 3 of the connector on the power supply cable going toward the Main Board. To do this, separate wire 1 and 2 and 3 from the rest of the wires. Now cut wire 1 and 3 and strip them back. Tape off the incoming side from wire 1 and 3 from the power supply board (right board). Since you know which wire is +5VDC, connect that wire to pin 1 on the connector. And Now you know the ground wire, so connect the gound wire to pin 3.
Almost done, put some friction tape on the bottom of the PCB of the power adapter and wrap it all in electrical tape so it won't fall off. Silicone it to the bottom and let dry so it won't move around if the unit gets moved. Put the cover back on and screw it in.
Now I have done this write up pretty quick as I don't ever have much time. I am sorry if I left out some steps or if I went over your heads. Anyway I did this because I have 2 children and 1 on the way. I don't need them reaching my cables, which would happen if just bought a powered hub. Having said that, if I were to do it again and I didn't have kids, I would probably just buy a powered hub just because I wouldn't want to risk destroying my unit. I only say that because the usb on the 5960 was only meant for 500ma and I now allow it to pull as much as 2.5 Amps that's over 4 times as much max. My portable is only 1 amp so I am not really concerned about hurting my unit, but if you have a high powered 3.5" 10,000 rpm hard drive, I can't guarantee how long it will last. Any way here are the pictures and if you have any questions, send them to me. I'll try to get to them. Thanx. Actually, I need to change the files size and then I will send them. Thanx.

I recently got the 5960 and im having a problem with DIVX playback from a San Disk Cruzer 2.0GB, it stops the film and about halfway through resets to the file name ??
Ive tried two DIVX films and both do the same.
Any ideas, im running the lastest UK firmware ??
Thanks -
You probably have a bad movie. Does it always stop the movie in the same spot?
-
Yes they do, in the exact same place.
Will look around for ways to fix.
Thanks
