i have a bit of a problem here. i tried using my ext hd (WD 500GB SATA II using Metal Gear Box enclosure http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817716035 ) with my DVP5982 (i know this is thread is for 5960 but i believe they are similar in USB support). I could not make the device recognize my ext hd. I have made a 3 GB primary FAt32 partition still it is still not recognizing my hd. any ideas what needs to be done? or should i just buy another enclosure?

Not all USB externals will work, It's more or less the luck of the draw. I have ARGOSY units, some work some don't, I think the circuit board they use differs, not everything ends up compatable, I havn't got a 500 gb to work, 160 gb was my limit until I started using MY BOOK 320 GB, to my supprise it worked out of the box, so I got 3 more. Number 2 worked out of the box. three and four are for future use. When you find something that works, stock up, that way they have the same parts inside. Jim

I wish Sam's Club had a MY BOOK 500gb, I would have tried one to see if it worked, they had a 500 gb, but it was another brand, and I wasn't brave enough, and it cost too much to take a chance, the 320 was a sure thing at a good price.

  4. A lot of people find that using SwissKnife to format their drives makes them work with the 5960 whereas other format programs don't.

i have not tried using Swissknife. I used the windows xp bootdisk to format it (insert windows xp sp2 installation disc, boot from the disc and when it tries to install windows, i pick the option to format as fat32)

i wanna try using the swissknife but i do not have the dvd player in my possession rite now.

I tried to use Swissknife, but for some reason it didn't like my machines, I also lost a new 160gb, seagate with Partition Magic, when it rebooted my system it crashed it and lost the drive info. A project for a later date, things happen. Jim

I have plans to get a DVP5960 but I also have my doubts regarding the complaints that people have to it, like the stuttering. Do all people with external hds over 100gig have this problem with stuttering image? I have an external 160gig hd and there is no problem to change it toFAT32 but if the divx-movies will stutter every 15 seconds it feels kind of pointless to use it.

Does Divx movies work better on a small usb-device with about 1 gig storage?

I saw that a new player has arrived to the stores, DVP5980, do you think its more stable than the 5960?

I dont have very good knowledge about the difference between USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 besides that 2.0 is faster. Does USB 1.1 affect how good movies run on the dvd or why complains people so much about the old USB-format?

The stuttering is caused by bandwith limitations of USB 1.1, It's only a problem in high action scenes, the data flow exceeds the USB 1.1 bandwith. If you want to get picky, take the family to the movie, I'm sure you will find something there to complain about too.

The My Book 320 GB, transfers better than my other USB drive housings, and works out of the box. (Posted back a few posts) It's been sain that slower drives may work better, maybe that's why the My Book works better. A fast USB stick may work better, it varies from brand to brand, as does everything.

I've only bought 5 5960, sure I'll have to try the 1 or 2 of the 5980's, can't have too many of a good thing. Jim

Bit offtopic here but has anyone figured a way to get it to not shut off after so long? Kind of a pain in the ass when you pause a movie and come back to find the player shut off. So far I haven't been able to find anything in the manual bout being able to shut it off. Just seems like there should be a way. Got a usb card reader hooked to it with 2 2GB SD cards and it works great. Haven't tried my usb hardrive on it yet, its NTSC so haven't bothered seeing everyone says it won't work. Great little player for the price though. Thanks

Ok, i think im gonna buy a player (5960 or 5980) after all. Im not too picky but how much does the movie stutter in these high action scenes? It feels that the stuttering could make the whole experience of the movie quite bad but if it is a very little stutter i think i could live with it. No stuttering during burnt cds with divx movies?

One last question, are there any existing dvd-players today with usb 2.0?

  11. I use both and The only time I;ve seen stuttering is when I tried as a test to play a DVD from the External. The USB1.1 just couldn't keep up with the bandwidth needed. Playing Divx/Xvid they always look smooth to me

The ones I create using TDA3 as ultra divx play fine too. chapters and menus work as they should. FF beyond 4x is not as smooth from the external as from DVDs as expected. It is usable just not a smooth.. IE it shows less frames of video but still IMHO usable.

I only use DVDs with either +R and +R DLs and -R all work. They work with DVD Video format or Divx/Xvid. For the +R DLs imgburn to burn and for Data (Divx/Xvid/mpg) Nero 6.6 for Sls.

My biggest complaint is the cheesy remote. I had two Toshiba Divx players, Much better remote. Sadly the build quality leaves something to be desired. They both started having problems playing DVDs partway inthe the first half of the movie or first title of episode discs. Skipping past that point would finish playing the disk fine.

It depends on how high the bitrate gets and for how long. If you have an action scene that's 8000 kbps for for an extended period it will be unwatchable. The sound will be totally broken up and the picture will lock up until the bitate comes down. If it goes up to 4000 kbps for a second or two it won't be bad.

I haven't tried CDs but I've run 8000 kbps CBR from DVDs with no problems.

  13. As long as you stay with say 1.4gb for a 2 hour Divx it will play fine. Trying to play Highbitrate MPGs externally will stutter.Stay with Divx/Xvid or VCD quality mpgs for external use and no problems. If you have high bitrate files either convert them or play them from a dvd.

Only the external devices have problems with high bitrates. Since the optical drive is a DVD it will of course handle any DVD spec bitrate/ Approx 10,000 kbps.

The limiting factor here is not the decoder it is the USB interface speed.

USB 2.0, can be had on high end machines, but not for $60 to $80 dollars. Reality Check Please. For the money these machines are better than great, they actually work. Jim

Okay, but small usb-devices (1gb) handles divx movies with high bitrate better than an external hd, with no stuttering?

Maybe a little off-topic but related to the subject in one way. I dont have much knowledge about this bitrate-thing. What bitrate goes a "normal" divx-movie with some action-scenes or none?

Another example, a movie with a plot set in the world war II (lots of "action-scenes") how high bitrate will it be on that movie? Maybe its hard to say but to try to summarize it and compare with a romantic drama with no action-scenes.

Maybe someone could relate to some tv-show or movie converted to divx.

Typical files you might download are around 1000 kbps average bitrate, ~350 MB for a 45 minute TV episode, ~700 MB for a 90 minute movie. I haven't see any problems playing these off a USB thumb drive.

I'm using the same box only it's ATA instead of SATA, with 250GB HD. I used Swiss to format the drive, the only change I made was the USB cable. The power cable is fine, but the USB cable is extremely loose ie; dropped data. I had a spare cable that fit very snug and it's all good. A pic and more info about the software follows. I've watched several movies start to finish bitrate @ 3000kbps, no stutter, outstanding Video Quality. More Guides on the way.

@jagabo, if you have comments or suggestions for tweaking the Templates for improving the quality etc. I would appreciate it. Thanks

Is there any way to get 5.1 sound out of this thing?

I just run coax from my 5960 to my receiver for digital audio. I get 5.1, no problems. I've heard you only get stereo from the coax port if you're using an HDMI cable (presumably 5.1 goes to the HDMI cable). I don't know if that's true though. Or if there's a firmware update for that problem.

my HDTV doesnt have audio out... is there some kind of adapter i can plug between the HDMI cable and the TV, to extract the 5.1 audio signal? Or is the signal digital so you need a decoder to connect it to speakers?

EDIT: btw can you run any kind of hd divx on this?

  25. No HD Divx playback. If you want HD Divx you need to visit their site and look at the Divx Certified HD players or google for example.

http://www.divx.com/products/hw/browse.php?c=7 for the 4 HD Divx players. $250 USD and up.

  26. I only have vista and a lot of usb hardrives. Anyone figure out a work around for fat 32. NO option to format to fat32 in vista. So far every utility I have tried (swisskniff, fat32formatter?etc) Either wont launch or crashes. Is this futile trying to do this through Vista. Loading up win98 or xp would just be a little bit to much.
