""if only I can find a way to get long file names so I can keep track of everything.""

I found folders work wonders in place of a name, since it will display the folder name correctly

I have several hard drives, but decided on the WD MyBook 250GB. I tried several other drives, but some skipped, etc. I also decided to reformat this drive from scratch.

Thanks goes to Sqash for the double-stop thing ^^ That thing drived me nuts, lol.

Now i love my dvp5960 even more than i did some hours ago. Got a USB multi card reader today, and decided to put three different memory cards in it at the same time and plug it in. It worked! It Showed a list of tthe files on the first memory card, and whn i pressed the USB button on the remote it showed the next card etc (on screen it said usb 1, usb 2, usb 3). that's pretty good! Must mean it works with usb hub too, but the hub i got wioth the card reader wasn't working at all even with my PC so i cant say for sure. Can anyone try?
I'd love to have this working on my DVD...though i reckon slowdown might be a problem?

Very odd, I am using folders and they are cutoff just like the filenames. I will hook the WD MyBook up to the computer tomorrow and see if I can play around with it and get it to work on the folders.

    Hey guys

Some dude keeps saying, "I repeat , your external hard drive must be powered blah, blah, blah!" Well, I've been using a 120gb Western Digital Passport, only powered through the 5960's USB port, quite well. The Passport already comes in FAT32 and has a cool recycle bin feature that I was able to access through the 5960's remote to play, without restoring, a "deleted" video my wife wanted to see. I picked up the Passport at Costco for $99 earlier this month, only $20 more than a measly 2 GB SanDisk cruizer.

Actually, my tale involves two 5960's. I got them both at Circuit City this month. The first one played my DiVX files from the Passport without a hitch. I decided to try the HD upscale button on the front of the unit. That's when the problems started. After that, my Passport would usually get the "device not supported" error most of the time. The couple of times that error did not show up, I was able to look at the files on my Passport, but they would not play. So, I went to CC, exchanged the 5960, and am never going to touch that HD upscale button again, unless there's a firmware upgrade that addresses this issue.

We watched a Korean TV show and Pirates of the Caribbean last night from my Passport on our second 5960. Good times.

    Hi all
I got this player couple days ago.
    Works perfectly, but...

I have downloaded HD movie wich is 4.5 Gb HD DivX rip
Question: how could I see it on this player?

DVD - does not support large files. Only up to 2Gb. If I use UDF then Philips shows Unrecognized disk.
I do not have enclosure but after readingthis forum I got understandiong that FAT32 HDD will not be able to store this file too.

    So what can I do?

    Tnx

Re-encode to MPEG-2 DVD spec or to a new DivX/XviD that is 720x480 or 720x576 etc.

No HDTV resolutions with the Philips DVP-5140 nor DVP-5960

I have a 30GB video iPod and, if I boot it up in disk mode, I can play divx movies stored on it. However, they all have choppy playback and the files should be fine since the movies play back fine in my DVP5960 when I burn it to DVD.

It's not a big deal since I could just buy one of the many working USB drives mentioned in this thread. It just seems odd that no other iPod users have mentioned anything about choppy playback. It would also be alot more convenient if the iPod solution worked for me. Any ideas? Thanks.

The movie is DivX HD RIP and its resoluton is 720p.
it is .wmv file. may be that is the problem?

I was trying to create UDF DVD with 50Mb avi and Philis recognized this disk and played the file. I just do not have 2+ Gb avi file to try. So my all afforts are with wmv file 4.5 Gb. And I do not have small wmv to try

I don't think it plays WMV. And is certainly doesn't play 720p. You should convert to Divx/Xvid AVI with a smaller frame size, say 640x360. But WMV can be hard to deal with.

I'm using my Ipod, but just to play music thru the unit. I also have the 30gig video Ipod. My problem with the ipod however is when i do boot it in DISC mode, the file names are non-sensical, so i have no clue what songs i'm selecting. Anyone else using the ipod have the same issue?

I also ply lots of Divx/Xvid files via the unit, but i burn a bunch to dvd, as i find the dvd media cheap enuff. Hvent tried the HD thingee yet, as i doubt i'd use it much.

No, the movies I'm trying to view off the iPod are all less than 640x340 divx avi files. They also work fine off of an external USB hard drive or DVD.

  15. I have this player, but when I plug in an iPod nano 4GB (newest generation), it says "device not supported". Could a firmware update fix this kind of problem? My firmware version is now 12.06.36.24.

Edit: Never mind, I should have read the entire thread first :P.

I have created a page containing all the info I could find on the 5960/12:

    http://www.phunkyfish.com/article/4/philips-dvp-596012

Includes tips, hacks, info on external drives and flash drive compatibility and a listing of the firmwares available. Any comments, additions etc. PM me, or leave a comment on the page.

Does anyone know of a replacement remote control for this player? I mean the remote that comes with it is mostly iseless because of its range/you have to point it DIRECTLY at the player. Anyone have a programmable remote, if so, does it work better?

I find that universal or learning remotes work much better than the wimpy remotes that come with cheap DVD players.

    Hi2All
I have an external hdd that has two FAT32 partitions. The first one can be seen by Philips without any problem, but the second one - not. I just would like to switch between these two partitions, is it possible?

Thank you in advance for your help

I don't think this can be done. You may only have one partition and it must be primary... You could try pressing the usb button on the remote again but I doubt it would work...

I would imagine that pressing the hd upscale button requires more power and then less is available for the usb port. Although things should revert to normal when the button is pressed again. That's definitely a bug...

I tried to do it - no luck! Pressing usb button once shows first partition menu, and twice turns it off. But thank you anyway

I recently bought this player for the USB capabilities and thanx for everybody's post I got it to work on my USB HD (Swissknife + primary partition did the trick)

Has anybody tried this w/ a wireless HD ? something like :

    http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1173261&CatId=0
    or even
    http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1065015&CatId=0

also I don't have a highDef TV yet, and am using the RCA cable and sorrily miss the Svideo connection. I was wondering if there was an converter cable to Svideo that can be used to improve the picture?

Thanx for everybody's post.. I love this DVD Player..

  25. I got access to my external hard drive through the USB port on the DVP5960 thanks to all the tips here on this forum. I can play MP3's fine but WMA files will not play. Is this because they have Digital Rights Management? I tried playing the files on the same hard drive from the computer and they play fine. I'm thinking there is no mechanism for the Philips player to check the licence or however DRM works.

    Thanks for any ideas.

I've discovered something rather weird about the player when it comes to stuttering. I use a 30 GB 2.5" hdd with external power supply on my player, and it usually plays fine. BUT whenever the is noise in the picture, it stutters! Like now, I'm watching a normal 350MB episode of NCIS (3x23) and whenever there's a flashback in the episode, they use picture noise to show that it is indeed a flashback (like some old photos or something) and it stutters EVERY TIME, but it goes back to normal when the flashbacks are over. I've noticed it before to, i.e another NCIS episode where the beginning is a nightvision video full of picture noise, and it stuttered as hell. If anyone has the episodes i mention or have noticed the same, please tell ^^

I never had that problem with my philps dvp 5140, its little brother, but I do have a problem with sound having static in high pitch music on some shows sometimes.

Its easily fixed if I could figure out how to lower volume on dvd player like I could with my apex 1110w.

Noisy video requires high bitrates. Any VBR encoding will have very high bitrates during that type of scene.
