  1. I am working on a DVD documentary for our family reunion next month, and need to chop up an audio file into a bunch of smaller portions. The video is mostly slide-show of images and documents (with the requisite Ken Burns effects). I prepared a script and had a professional narrator read it and she sounds great. But, now, I need to “chop” this audio up into individual sound files of 30 sec to 2 minutes so I can remix the individual files back with proper timing and spacing so it matches up to the proper part of the video.

I’ve used Audacity, but it is a real pain as you have to select the portion you want to save with the mouse and this is really hard because there is not much delay where I need to cut. What would be perfect, is something that lets you use multiple bookmarks or other markers, that which can be set with the keyboard... so I can listen to the file, and each time I want to make a cut, just hit a key, and then when finished, the program will create a bunch of different files, cutting the original file up at each bookmark.

    Suggestions?

Nero will let you cut an audio file up prior to burning to CD (such as with a live recording where all tracks run into one another) but whether it will save them like that or just burn them I don't know. You could always burn them as individual tracks and then import the individual tracks from the resulting CD.

  3. Thanks... Nero Wave Editor is close. It does have an option to write out the tracks as individual files (good). But it requires you to select the cut point visually with the mouse, and not the keyboard. You also can't reposition the playback while it is playing.. you have to stop, reposition, and then play again.

CD WAVE Editor is the easiest program I have found for this (and it's free).

  6. CDWAVE is the easiest and best program for this. You can cut the file into as many pieces as you like and it will save them as individually numbered files that are in order and easy to organize. Go to www.etree.org and download it.
