Linux is a must for php forum hosting from what I know. PHP is the type of forum technology used here at videohelp and many other websites.

  3. PHP runs on both win32 and Lin*x.

I'd go with the platform your more expirenced with as most
websites these days are exploited via PHP holes.

However, I'd still bet that the Lin*x PHP is alot more stable then the win32
    version.

  4. I've got a small Linux machine running downstairs. It's been up for ages. Apparently, Linux uptime is measured in decades (I doubt it has been tested, though).

Typically Apache (assuming that's what you'll be running) is also faster and more stable on Linux. It is also usually easier to get crucial addons like mod_security working on Linux.

    Go with what you need.

Both OS run PHP just fine. Not much difference at all. They're basically the same.

Windows runs ASP, Linux does not. Sure, Linux has some sort-of ASP like Chilisoft, but it's not even close to the same as true ASP (which was developed by MS).

Linux anti-leech and other features are easily available in the ".htaccess" file. Windows has no such file, and most of those features must be added via special DLLs or components installed with a control panel (like PLESK or HELM). A few are native to te Windows IIS.

Both Linux and Windows have MySQL and PostreSQL, but only Windows has MS SQL. Only Windows can run Access or other similar ODBC DSN databases.

Linux is really cheap. Windows costs $$$ over the same period of time. Worth it? It is for many.

They are different OS's for different people. It's not different than why you'd choose a desktop OS/platform (Windows, Linux, Mac, Sun, etc).

Things like security and uptime are pretty even. Secondary problems cause those events to happen, not the OS itself. Windows server software is a lot different than your home Windows OS. It's quite stable.

  7. I would choose Linux, more stable than windows, even the server series.

but if you don't have that much traffic, doesn't matter, windows is just fine.
