When I go to burn a movie after using DVDSHRINK I get the following message, could this be a hardware problem? Any help would be appreciated. I never had this problem until recently.

Generally, a power calibration error is hardware related and internal to the burner. First thing to do is to try different media and that normally solves it. If not, clean your DVD burner laser lens. If neither of those changes do any good, then your burner may be failing.
-
AND...if your burner is the problem, mostlikely it will just DIE without
any warning...at least that has been my expirence.
Sabrowww.sabronet.com - It's all you need...to know -
I have a similar problem when I get to the burning stage in Shrink lately. However, the error message usually spits out something related to focus or tracking error - and then just packs up. However, when I then burn my encoded files using Nero separately, it seems to work just fine. I've made quite a few coasters lately... Is this likely to be a software issue or hardware?
Thanks... -
Raniburger, your problem may be different, though it still sounds like a hardware problem. You can look at the Nero site for Nero errors. http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/FAQs_Products_NeroBurningROM_Error-Messages.html#9
You could try different burning software and see if that makes any difference.
And I should mention the Nero site states two other possible causes of 'Power calibration errors'. One is not enough power being provided to the burner. This would be a power supply problem and could also happen with external burners. This would only be likely if you recently added more devices to the system and overloaded the PS. The second cause is a firmware problem with the burner and they suggest a firmware upgrade. This would relate more to using a different media that the burner wasn't originally set up for. Changing media to a different brand should solve this without a firmware change, but if all else fails, you have little to lose.
Probably the main thing with either error is, if they are caused by hardware problems internal to the burner, they will get worse. A software problem will generally be consistant. -
I just retried, this time just burning the saved image directly to disc using Nero. Failed again, here's the error message:

Does this help? -
Do NOT understand any of those error messages-above my head and understanding.
Why not try burning with DVD Decrypter after DVD Shrink? To rule out or rule in hardware problem.
There have been some issues with DVD Shrink and then burning with Nero recently; is it not beyond the realms of possiblity that it could be a software issue?
Sorry can help further. -
It's quite simple if you read through it. Everything goes fine until it tries to start burning and then it gets a laser focus or tracking error. Try putting a cleaning disc through the burner in case it is just dirt on the lens. If that doesn't work, it's time for a new burner.
-
Cleaned the burner and that didn't work so I went to Walmart and picked up a 16X dual layer burner for $50 and all is fine now. I needed a new one anyway.
-
With the price of DVD burners being fairly low these days, replacing them is sometimes the best option. If you have tried cleaning, changing media, tried a different burning program and still have the problem, replace the burner.
Consistent hardware errors such as 'Power calibration error' and 'Focus or tracking error' are almost always internal to the burner, and dirt is the most common cause. Other times the burner is just worn out or has a defect from the factory. Random errors such as 'DVD-Video files reallocation failed' are more likely software.
Nero generally does a good job of sorting them out in the log. Going to the Nero error page should give you an idea of the causes and cures.
