Is any hot burner sold region-free (like the NEC 3550 or BenQ DW1655 w/lightscribe) or is it necesary to flash them all to be region-free after purchase?
Any idea which hot burner would be most compatible with older standard stand-alone DVD players?
I want to be able to create DVDs that will play on the maximun number of stand-alone players.

AFAIK, any burner will have the regular region codes installed. You would need to flash it to change that. But that only applies to commercial DVDs that you are playing, not burning. All burned DVDs will be region free, unless you purposely put in the region code when burning.
Most any of the popular burners will burn a disc that is compatible. You may have to use BookType/BitSetting for older players for the best compatibility. If you look to the left in BD,DVD Writers you can see that as a search item for the listed burners. <<<<<< The media is usually more important than the burner for compatibility. TY media is one of the best.
