I just purchased one of these from newegg.

I hooked it up to one of my newly built computers.

Now, I've never played around with Firewire at all. I'm 20, and I don't own a camera, not even a digitial camera.

    My problem is this:

Alright, when I hook it up to the 6-pin firewire port, all the lights on the ADVC110 turn on. So I know it's getting power.

Now when I try to use the capture device part, I can't seem to get anything to work with it. On neweggs description part they have on there that Windows Movie Maker works with it. I've also tried the trial version of Ulead MediaStudio Pro8.

And none of them say that they can capture.

Now when I go into Device Manager, the drivers says it's working fine. Now, I've used USB quite a bit, and still am using it for mouses etc. When you have something plugged into a usb, it'll pop something up (Windows XP). Now with the firewire, it does not. I'm assumimg something is wrong with the firewire port. As that is the only sense I can make otu of it. I hooked my Xbox up to it, just to test it out.

I understand you don't use drivers with it.

Thanks in advance, I've searched for this, and I can't find anything that directly helps me.

    Thanks once again.

First thing to do is open up My Comlputer and make sure it's listed. Should be under scanners and cameras.

Flip it over and make sure dipswitch 6 is on the correct format, in your case NTSC. Second make sure the light is on anlog in, if not press it to switch to analog in.

It is just plug and play, you should just be able to plug it in and use it immediately.

Nope, it's not in my computer.

Nothing has popped up. However, the lights are on on the Unit. And I can switch between analog and digital signals.

In device manager is it showing up under imaging devices? Probably not if it's not in My computer, if it is showing up where at?

If you have acces to another computer with a firewire port I'd suggest trying it on there. That way you can at least eliminate the device and the cable if it works.

Don't got any other firewire on any of my other pcs.

But, I figure before I do anything, I'll update to SP2, then if that doesn't work I'll check the additional onboard adapter firewire thing gives me a second one for the case. But the case firewire doesn't work. That might be the reason why it's not working. I'll need to read the mobo manual. But as of right now I am updating the computer.

And the device doesn't pop up anywhere. I've also checked the drivers for my firewire, and they are all there.

I'll run process of elimination until I figure out the reason.

    Thanks in advance.

Is your firewire(IEEE1394 port) enabled in your BIOS?

Good point ... I once had a computer (a SONY VIAO) that had the FIREWIRE turned off in the DEVICE MANAGER by DEFAULT but I was able to turn it on using the DEVICE MANAGER ... not the BIOS.
