(I hope I've posted this in the right forum)

I've been thinking of buying some R1 DVDs (I live in Europe), but on some of the titles it says

R1 - Will only play on North American Region 1 or multi-region DVD players.

Please Note: Regional Coding Enhancement (RCE): has been added by Warner and Columbia to certain Region 1 DVD’s. RCE will prevent the DVD from playing on some “Multi-Region” DVD players. If you are in any doubt that your player may not be able to play RCE DVD’s, we recommend that you do not order this title, as we are unable to accept returned RCE DVD’s.
and I was wondering if there's a way to get around this? I used to have a multi-region DVD player, but it stopped working some time ago so I had to get a new one.

My new player is a combined DVD/VHS (an LG V9700), but it's not multi-regional. If I hack it, will I be able to play R1 DVDs w/RCE on it or is it completely hopeless?

I don't know how mant discs actually carry RCE. That said, with the LG hacks you seem, in many cases, to actually be able to change the region as required. 0 gives you multi-region, but you can always make it region 1 again for RCE discs.

As far as im aware, there are two categories for multi region dvd players.

    1. It is set as Region 0 in which case RCE dics will not work with.

    2. It is set as Region Free or set as to change region unlimited times in most cases, RCE discs do work with.

Another alternative is to rip the dvd and burn to dvdr as a region free disc with RCE stripped.

Get your hands on a Thomson DTH213...you can play anything you want and change region codes as often as you like.
