I am looking for the best media with the best printing surface. From all I have read, the concensus seems to be that TY and Verbatim are the best media. So of these two, which has the better printing surface (8X media)?

Yes both are the best media...........but Taiyo Yudens are the best of the best. I use Verbatim 16x printables. They give the same quality, for a less the price.

The Verbatim prints marginally better than the TY. They all print too light. Do not take ink well. Printing surfaces went down hill about a year ago. Maxell is the same. Just the way it is.

A sharpie looks nice and bright on any disc surface. Cheaper than ink too.

Verbatim famously have an oversized printing area, 119mm instead of 118mm. This creates problems with certain labelling software. Also full-face only. I use a different brand when I need a clear hub.
Don't know about TY. -
Neither, Ritek printable surface gives best results with my Primera Bravo Pro. Of course, riteks are unreliable but at least they look good.

I found Verbatim's to be very good as well as RiData. I just bought some Maxell which are hub printable, however the centre part over the plastic is much lighter than the rest of the disk. Never tried TY.
What is the centre like on the TY's, same as Verbatim or RiData? Is the whole disk smooth right to the centre? -
diacguy- Ritek does have the best print surface. Too bad so many coasters.

Maxell seems to have the worst surface of the bunch, least contrast and color. Verbs are a little better than the TYs. Neither the TY, Verb or Maxell surfaces are anywhere nearly as good as the Ritek. Ritek is completely smooth with a lot more contrast and saturation. I have been actually been getting better scans on my G05s lately than I have been on my TYs and Verbs (fresh out of the burner). Can't wait to see what happens six months from now, though.

I once bought a box of 25 Ritek printables and the matt finish was almost entirely missing from 10 of them. The supplier insisted on me returning them before he would give a refund which would have cost more than the ten were worth so I gave them to friend who uses sticky labels. Have also changed disc supplier since that incident.

I vote one for Verbatim. Cheaper and quality not bad.
Just for your reference.
