I have MPG files that I have captured TV shows/movies to, usually around 4gig per 2-hour show. the quality of these is quite good mostly (depends on cable and cable channel at the time).
Anyways I wish to convert these to AVI files. I have "videos" in AVI format that I have downloaded, where 2hours fits in about 800meg of AVI with EXCELLANT quality, so I know it can be done, however when I convert anything from MPG, regardless of quality of the original, to an AVI of less than 1gig the quality is bad and loss of color/clarity and w/lots of digital blocking
I have used VIDOMA and VEE-DUB and have same results with each - to get any kind of quality I cant really go under 2gig of AVI. I know it is a combination of my settings and codecs I am using. any suggestion/instructions/guides would be appreciated. I dont need them "perfect" as many I also have the DVD for but it is nice to have a sub-1gig AVI that I can watch anytime from my PC

2 hrs under 1 GB with EXCELLENT quailty? I think not. But the easy solution is avi.net or AutoGK. Very good results considering the ease of use and know-how involved. For more advanced use (and at least theoretically better end results), learn how to optimally configure your codec of choice (DivX or XviD?) and use VirtualDubMod

You can't get same quality as from progressive dvds to divx/xvid as from interlaced mpg captures to divx/xvid. Better source gives better quality.
And please post conversion in our conversion forum sections. Moving you. -
EXCELLANT-as-in-DVD quality of course not, but I have SEVERAL files in AVI format that are 800-900meg in size and still VERY good in quality for 1.5 to 2hour movies

Why so worried about their size? Media is cheap!
Use cq mode, set it at the quality you desire, and encode away!
