    Hi,all

I'm going to buy one dual layer burner, but but i'm not sure which one to get. What's the best brand in your opinion?

    Thanks for any info.

Could you further define what you mean by "best".
    Fastest burn speed?
Highest quality burns (low error rate) with media that's suited to that individual drive?
High quality burns with a wide range of different media?
Some drives are better than others at specific tasks.

The best brand is the best DVD burner that works the best for you. My best DVD burner may not be your best DVD burner. The best I can tell you is to read some of the best reviews from some of the best sites and some of the best magazines and then take your best guess and purchase the best burner that you have learned about. I could recommend a best burner to you but that best burner may not work the best for you. It might even be the worst. The best advice is to read a little, learn a little, and make your best decision.

My Advice: Unless DVD burning is essential to you at the present time I would wait a few months and see how the blue laser burning war goes and make a decision to purchase a DVD burner that will actually support your high definition / high capacity lifestyle. If you can't wait purchase the DVD burner with options you want and a price you can afford. Just don't pay more than $40 for a regular red laser burner. They are so 2002.

Prices are so low, that any mistake you make will be relatively insignificant.

Once you have a tentative decision on a drive, my advice is to go to the manufacuter's web site and determine when the last firmware update was issued. Or if the manufacturer has issued any updates (some don't),

New media are being introduced at a rapid pace and you may need updates to your drive within a relatively short time. You really don't want to spend your time hunting down compatible media or be restricted to mail order purchases.

Ideally your new drive will get good results with whatever media the big box stores have on sale in a given week.

    My $.02-

Had an LG-4163B and the second layer failed after a dozen burns.
Have a NEC 3550A that's done about that many and is fine so far. (knock, knock...)

This is a small sample size but consider it as well as other factors. Both will burn anything I throw at them, along with my single-layer A-Open. That's one of my principal requirements in a burner.

Here's a list of a variety of good drives starting at $33, even the 3550a. Take your pick.

I'm going to order the Benq DQ60 (the $33 one) tomorrow, because it also supports DVD-RAM and has a good reputation for taking whatever media you feed it.

    Addendum-

Finally just discovered that my NEC ND-3550A doesn't like RitekG05 too much, which is a common media that's you'll find on sale. So much for taking "everything". But it still rocks with the wide variety of other media I use.

Ritek GO5 has always sucked in any dvd burner.....rule of thumb buy good quality dvd media....then you'll have no problems....

First consideration should be on the media that is available to you in your local region ... no sence in buying a dvd burner that has had good review's if "x" brand media is unavailable to you .

I would seek the media brand's you have available locally , and see what the review's are first , then decide on the dvd burner , and media supported type's ... the more the better of course .

Or wait and see what the outcome is with the newer format's ... though these would be expensive to start with .

My preference is for lg , then sony , followed by pioneer ... never had any major problem's apart from crap media (magmedia and tdk are junk) .
