For my DVD backups, I have been using the following method: DVD Decrypter - DVD2AVI - AVISYNTH - VirtualDub Mod and I have been doing this manually.

I am a nitpick for quality and usually use 1200kbps encode with XviD and I am wondering if any one-click applications such as AutoGK or others will produce the same quality as what I have been doing manually.

Also, I wish to start using Divx Pro 6.2 for my encodes because of compatibility with standalone dvd players... is there any way to re-encode my previous XviD AVI's into DivX o make them compatible with standalone players?

try autogk and compare with your manually method.

most divx players supports xvid also but if you want to reconvert to divx you can use avi recomp or virtualdubmod.

I will try AutoGK this upcoming weekend...

I know XviD is supported by DivX since they are split from the same original code... but I tried decoding my XviD videos with DivX on my Media Center PC but the results were less than desireable. If I recode my XviD's into DivX with VirtualDubMod... (forgive me if this is a dumb question...) how should I configure DivX as to not compress the video any more, leaving the quality of the video intact as is?

autoGK works wonders and there are ways to control certain things using the advanced menu and the "hidden menu" which is accessable by using Ctrl-F9

Use the same bitrate and a 2-pass encode. But you'll still get lower quality because each decode/encode cycle will introduce more artifacts.

If you don't care specifically about file size use a single pass constant quantizer encode (constant quality). Pick the quality you want and let the file come out to whatever size it does.

DivX's decoder should give 100% identical output as XviD's or any other MPEG-4 decoder. This is without post processing.

XviD encoding with a home theatre preset should work just as well on standalones as DivX encoded with a home theater preset. Only exception are the rare players that can't handle XviD's fourCC.
