Best is what works for you. For some, the best method is a DVD recorder. For other it is avisynth and virtualdub, with a free encoder.

Questions you should consider when making a decision include

    1. Do I need to edit the footage ?
    2. Will the editing be simple or complex ?
    3. Do I want to learn about the process, bitrates, etc ?
    4. Do I mind waiting 8 hours for one of hour of DV footage to encode ?
    5. Is image quality more important than simplicity ?
