According to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906485/ verbose logging is enabled in Windows XP by these instructions.
To enable verbose logging on a Windows XP-based computer, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open field, and then click OK
2. Locate and then double-click LogLevel under the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup
3. On the Edit DWORD Value window, click to select Hexadecimal on the Base pane.
4. Type 0000FFFF in the Value data box.
5. Click OK.
However, in step 3 I see no Edit DWORD Value window, but I do see LogLevel of type REG_DWORD which I'm guessing is what is meant in the instructions since that's the only thing within the Setup sub key related to logging. Does anyone know if this is correct or how to enable verbose logging if this isn't correct?

Sounds like you've opened the SETUP "folder" on the left side and are looking at the LOGLEVEL entry on the right. Step 2 asks you to double-click the LOGLEVEL entry which will open a dialog box allowing you to edit the value it contains.
Step 3 onwards are for manipulating this dialog box settings & entering a new value. -
Sorry, I over looked the double click part of step 2. Thanks for pointing out the over sight.
