  3. i contacted sony via chat:

    user Scott has entered room

    analyst Alvin_ has entered room

Alvin_> Hi Scott. Welcome to Sony Online Support. I'm Alvin. I'll be glad to assist you in transferring the video from the Camcorder to the Computer.

Alvin_> What is the operating system that is installed in your computer?

    Scott> xp home edition

Alvin_> The Windows XP as native Driver support and you need not install the USB Driver to the computer.

Alvin_> Please make sure that the Camcorder Power switch is set to PLAY/EDIT and the USB-PLY/EDT to USB STREAM in the Camcorder STANDARD SET menu.

Alvin_> Also, ensure that these settings are made before connecting the Camcorder to the Computer.

Scott> i have installed vegas 6 with current updates and it will not recognize it to capture

Alvin_> Have you set the USB STREAM in the Camcorder?

Scott> all the above u mentioned is correct on my end. i am also using a firewire to capture by the way

Scott> i apologize i guess i should of said that in the beginning

    Alvin_> It is Okay!

Alvin_> Please disconnect the Camcorder from the Computer and reconnect to the different USB port of your computer.

Alvin_> Also make sure that you have not connected any other USB Devices like printer, scanner to the computer.

Alvin_> Please connect the Camcorder only with the USB interface and not the Firewire(i.LINK) interface.

    Scott> ok

Scott> it said that a problem occured during installation there may be a problem later..... other than that it did come up and say all the sony bs

Alvin_> Is the Camcorder recognized by the computer?

Scott> i am checking stand by

    Alvin_> Sure, I'll be online.

    Scott> yes. usb is working

Alvin_> Please start the Windows Movie Maker software which is preinstalled in the Windows XP operating system and check if you are able to transfer the video from the Camcorder to the Computer.

    Scott> yes that does work

    Alvin_> That is great!

Alvin_> Is there anything else that I can assist you with?

Scott> according to the vegas software it says device is not available.

Alvin_> As you are able to transfer the video to the computer via Windows Movie Maker software, there is no issue with the camcorder or with the computer.

Scott> cool, i will uninstall and reinstall vegas later.

Alvin_> The Sony VEGAS is handled by another division of Sony.

Alvin_> I suggest that to contact the Sony VEGAS support team at 800-577-6642 for assistance.

    Scott> ok

    Scott> thank you
not very helpful if you ask me, but it does all work.

If I had known you were trying to get video I'd have suggested not using the USB. USB is for web quality video or for transferring stills it does not transfer the full DV qulaity that you will get by using firewire... if you look in your manual it will tell you that.

and if you are using USB, you've posted in the wrong forum heading......

It isn't DV and it certainly isn't HDV. Unfortunately, there isn't a forum heading for webcams......

Why oh why do people keep shooting decent quality video and then ruining by using the stills port to transfer???

Vegas works fine with IEEE-1394 (I-Link) DV transfer. Are you trying to load stills into Vegas? Just use XP to pull the stills to the My Pictures file and import them into Vegas.

You certainly aren't atempting to use the CIF 352x240 webstream video with Vegas are you? What effect are you after?

PS: The best I can figure, the video that comes out of a Digital8 USB port is CIF 352x240 MPeg1 using the telecom h.261 (possibly h.263) format commonly used for video conferencing (including consumer Netmeeting YahooMessenger, etc.). H.261 allows bitrates in increments of 64Kb/s. 768Kbps is often used in pro videoconferencing systems and that is probably what Sony uses. If this is true, the bitrate is 3% vs. DV and Y resolution is 25% vs. DV.

My Digital8 camcorder doesn't have this feature so I can't test it.

You did, but it appears that the person at the other end completely ignored that and still spoke about USB and not Firewire. None of my Sony camcorders have USB ports, only Firewire, so I don't have the same menu options. It seems to me that you have followed the instructions and set the camcorder to output a USB stream, when you don't actually want one, you want to output to Firewire. See what the other options are.

If WinDV works and you if you see a IEEE-1394 Bus host adapter in Device Manager, then all that would indicate Windows XP and DirectX are happy.

You will still need to use USB to transfer stills from the flash card.

As for prosumer level Vegas, it needs setup. All this is spelled out in the install manual. You need to ID the capture program location, choose the video capture device, choose hard disk directories to hold the temp files, etc. etc. If all else fails, call Vegas support.
