I recently saw a dvd rip of a movie, and right before the movie started, a picture was displayed saying something along the lines of "Ripped by <name of person>".

I tried adding a image to my rips but dvd shrink just give me an error message. I am assuming this is because it is the wrong format and size.

What file format and size should this custom image be, and how do I add it (with DVD shrink) before the start of my rips?

Assuming that you're not distributing your backups, and that you'd probably be the only one to ever see this "Ripped By ..." screen, are you really so vain as to need to read your own name ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

Wow, some people sure are presumptuous on the internet arent they.

I never said that I am adding a "ripped by" screen. I used that as an example and asked how I can add an image (I assume this would be the same process as how people add those "ripped by" screens so used that as an example).

If you must know, I wanted to make a sort of rudemantary "complitation" disc with a bunch of vid clips and such as well as some clips from home videos that I have converted and burned to dvd already. I wanted to add a custom screen with text at the start as this will be an anniversary gift for my parents.

I dont have actuall video creating/editing software (since I would probably be able to add text in such programs) but as you know, DVD shrink can set start/stop parts of video so I will cut peices that way.

    Can anyone help?

    It's all in the wording.

Nowhere did I see the word "example" - from the wording of your post you saw Ripped By screens and wanted to add them to your DVDs.

Anyway, all you need to do is create an MPEG in an MPEG encoder, which takes your still image and a sound file of a given length of time (it can be music or just blank), then convert to DVD-compliant MPEG and use your authoring software to specify this as the firstplay clip. If your authoring software does not do this natively, PGCEdit can insert it for you after the fact - just author the rest of your disc as you would like it, then author your firstplay clip seperately, then use PGCEdit to import the VOB of the firstplay clip and insert it into the rest of the DVD.
    If in doubt, Google it.
