If you can, try using a different cable, or hooking your camera up to a different computer, and see if the problem persists.

Do you have a better suggestion ?

    For the record, I have

1 PC (and 1 laptop - work supplied)
    1 DV camera
    1 Digital still camera
    2 DVD players

I do not own a DVD recorder or widescreen TV (plasma or LCD).

I am just kidding. So serious you are.

    I would try winDV.

Firewire cable and firewire hardware and software are normally pretty solid. It maybe the cam.

Sounds like a loose cable connection to me.

Best to try it on another computer before ripping up your system.

All the apps, including WinDV use the same DirectShow functions to transfer DV. It may well be the camcorder. That would show up by testing on another computer.

Are you connecting it to a port on the case? I had the same trouble, the manufacturer of my computer had connected the port to my soundblaster audigy card instead of directly to the mobo. Apparently this is not an issue for many but for me it was, had the same problem as you and it would randomly disconnect...

Moving the connection directly to the mobo fixed the problem.
