  1. Hello!
What is your favorite program for transcoding quality, and why?

I'm thinking about moving from instant copy to another program for creating my dvd backups. I originally chose it a few years back because it seemed like the results had less mpeg artifacting to me than other programs.

What programs do you use for transcoding, and why?

I'm really looking forward to see what people are using these days.

    thanks!

I use DVD Remaster on my Mac. However, once I get my Macbook (Intel-powered), I'll install XP and run DVD Shrink. That says a lot about that app; It's the first app (after AVG Anti-Virus) that I'll install for the Dark Side. :P

DVD Shrink. Free, reliable, good quality for a transcoder, burns with DVD Decrypter.

DVDShrink - As you could have read from the weekly question that pop up on this subject.
Oh, and: Beacuse it's free, and there's nothing even marginally better (at transcoding).

  7. Instant Copy does a good job. If you think it's the best transcoder, or one of the best, that's at least a defensible position. A little slow, though.

I'd say IC is comparable to DVDShrink using deep analysis and AEC. Using those options pretty much negates the speed advantage of DVDShrink. And don't forget Rejig, good transcoder, fast, no options.

Here's a good FAQ on transcoders:

    http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?&threadid=63587

If you want a transcoder you can tweak, there's Solveig MPEG2Requantizer. You can tailor the settings to a particular movie and obtain a better result. In theory, anyway.

My own preference is DVDShrink, no DA or AEC, for nothing more than a few percent "compression", sometimes Rejig. Anything more, and it goes to DVDRebuilder. Just personal preference, there's room to disagree here. :P
    Pull! Bang! Darn!
