I've encoded some 1.5-2-hr movies to 1-gb size with ND and found the results to be terrific. So, I'd think a movie of the same length encoded to 4.2-gb would be indistinguishable from the original, since I hardly can tell the difference at 1-gb. (The encoding bitrate is typically over 1-gb, especially for the shorter movies.)
I'd think encoding to 4.2-gb ND MP4 would be wasting a LOT of disc space if all you want is the movie. However, using the various "shrink" softwares (non-ND), you do end up with a DVD-compliant version vs. ND's proprietary MP4 version not playable on many standalone players (see www.avayon.com, which may or may not be available in BC).
And, these "shrink" softwares can encode the entire DVD9 (movie and extras) to DVD5 with usually no worse than "acceptable" visual degradation except for very long movies.
As always, "quality" is in the eye of the beholder.
My bet: Movie only, the ND MP4 would look better if burned to a DVD5, but maybe not enough better to sacrifice DVD compatibility.
You've aroused my curiosity, though, since I have an Avayon player . . . . Might just have to do a comparison . . . .
