OK, could someone please enlighten me.
I have a video file I want to convert to VCD. I open the file in TMPGEnc via the wizrad. I get to the screen which shows the filesize graph, showing me that my converted file will be too big to fit onto the selected 80min CD.
So I unlock the bitrate and reduce it until TMPGEnc shows that my converted file size will fit onto my 80min CD ( filesize approx 782MB ).
The file is successfully converted.
I open Nero and select VCD. I open my converted file and Nero checks it for compliancy. Of course it fails as the video bitrate is not correct. So I tell Nero to ignore it. Nero's filesize graph then shows that my file is too big to fit on the CD. Why is this ? I thought you can fit approx 803MB on a 80min CD in VCD format.
TMPGEnc showed it should fit.
What did I do wrong ?
Thanks in advance.

Or don't choose VCD as a template since you are not adhering to the VCD spec.

Nero tells you this because it is correct. The other 2 posts are, unfortunately, not really helpful. An 80 minute CD burned as a VCD can hold 800 MB of VCD data. 803 is greater than 800, hence the message from Nero.
Now what you can do is to overburn. There is an advanced option under Nero for overburning. Set it to burn up to a maximum of 82 minutes and you should be OK. Nero will ask you if you wish to overburn and give you some dire warnings about potential disaster, but you will have to overburn to get the data on the disc.
I would like to suggest that you consider buying some 90 minute CD-Rs to burn to since you want to make long VCDs. Most burners can correctly burn 90 minute CD-Rs and most devices can correctly play them. There are no 100% compatibility guarantees as a few burners have been reported to not be able to burn a full 90 minutes on these discs and some devices may refuse to play them, but my experience has been that they work fine. Please note that 90 minute CD-Rs do violate CD standards, hence the warning that some burners may not actually be able to burn them or some devices may not be able to play them. To burn a 90 minute CD-R, you need to set Nero to overburn to 90 minutes and please note that Nero will recognize these discs as being 80 minute CD-Rs, which is not technically correct. -
Thanks for the replies. First off my file is only about 787MB. I have tried VCD Easy and it complains like Nero.
Also I have used Nero to burn a 803MB complient VCD file to an 80min CD with no problem as would be expected. The complient file of course was only about 70min in length not 110min.
This seems to be where Nero and VCD Easy have a problem. They ignore the fact that the file size is actually OK for VCD and focus on the wrong video bitrate.
Overburing is not an option here as the file seems to be treated as normal data so goes way beyond the limit of 700MB for an 80min CD. -
I don't do VCDs because they, well, look like crap!
Now as far as why it will not fit. There are other files in the VCD structure that are created. They add to the final size of the volume so,,, yes it doesn't fit and your original file IS too big.
That's a hell of a lot of work for VCD quality. No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD! -
Jman, I have never seen 90 min CDs on sale at a store.
Do you buy them on the web?
I would have thought that they were an oddity that died out.
I'd like to fool around with them just to say I'd done it.
Otherwise as the last poster pointed out, given the drop in prices for DVD burners and discs, there is really little reason to mess around with VCDs.
(Now DVD on CD still makes sense for very short video clips...)
