mkv is a video container like avi, it is not a video codec like xvid.

I now know that mkv is a format but I'm curious about the difference in quality if you compare a file of 700 MB of xvid and mkv.

You don't understand: AVI and MKV are container formats. Think of them as jars. In both jars, you can put many different things. XviD is one. The very same XviD can be put into both the AVI and MKV jar, and of course the quality will be the same, regardless of jar.
difference in quality if you compare a file of 700 MB of xvid and mkv.
is laike asking: What's the difference in quality between 0.5 litres of beer and a bottle?

This is a quote from Matroska main site:

"First, it is essential to clarify exactly "What an Audio/Video container is", to avoid any misunderstandings:

It is NOT a video or audio compression format (video codec)
It is an envelope for which there can be many audio, video and subtitles streams, allowing the user to store a complete movie or CD in a single file."

Read again what Baldrick said and follow the link and the sublink.
When you read that, you will understand that your question is pointless.
