  2. Check whether your wireless router setup with any default encryption. Turn the wireless router over and see there is any label about default encryption mode and key.

    Done this the other day .

    The pc connecting via wireless :

    Go to start , setting's , control panel , system , tab "computer name" , hit "change" button
    Give it a unique name , and make sure you put in network name "the actual name of your network" as on the main pc that is sharing this connection .
    Click ok , pc may require restart .

    Next , go to start , setting's , control panel , network connection's .
    "General" tab , click on "internet protocol (tcp/ip)
    Click properties , then sellect "use the following address"

    Ip can be anything , but here is an idea :

    Ip = 192:128:116:4
    Sub net mask = 255:255:255:0 (alway's)

    Please be aware some amd system's will not like "ip" last number's being 0 , 1 , 2 , 3 (I have personally seen machine's fail too startup)

    As this is for the pc connected via wireless you must set this part on the pc sharing the connection as well .

    If wireless connected pc =

    Ip = 192:128:116:4 then
    Ip = 192:128:116:5 (pc sharing too wireless connected pc) .

    Reboot both pc's ... both should beable to see each other in network connection (your network name will have 2 pc's listed by unique name's)

    This is the same manner in which I connect win98 , win98se , winme , linux pc's to xp using adsl connection (dont tell my telco's in au , they charge extra) .

    Your wireless pc should now beable to do all online ... and will not affect the other's connected to the router , though it is best to set them as well , just so there is no problem with each pc seeing all other's on the local network ...

    Sharing folder's between them for what ever purpose is done via "drive mapping" , simpler to handle over the long term ...

    If you have problem's , you may need to check the firewall setting's on the pc sharing the connection (the one connected to router)

    Start , setting's , control panel , windows firewall , choose "local area connection" , service's .
    Allow ftp , http , and mail if required .

    Also engage file and printer sharing for transfer's between pc's on local network (I do it for video and dvd authoring)

    That's as far as I go ... but yet again , I have no need to mess with the firewall anyway .

    Xp's auto network is crap , I prefer the old way of telling it what is correct ... atleast if it gose bungup , I know where to look for the problem fast .
