I finally found the fix for previewing a .PSD file in thumbnail view using winXP, although the problem isn't relative to Windows itself, and not everyone had this problem, but a few poeple I know have. It seems that if you have a fresh install of Photoshop CS (versus an update), you lose a particular DLL file named psicon.dll (why Photoshop chose to remove this feature doesn't make sense). You can download the DLL file from:

    http://www.dlldump.com/download-dll-files.php/dllfiles/P/psicon.dll/download.html

And then place the DLL in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Shell\ and it should start previewing again. Hope this helps anyone else with the same problem.

Why not just use Adobe Bridge? It comes with Photoshop.

I have all my images in one folder and and when doing photo work I like to just open the folder and view as thumbnails, plus I didn't know....hahaha

how would I use adobe bridge? Does it let me view my photos as thumbnails or do I still have to open a progam to view the PSD files? Also, I can't seem to find it?

    Excellent!

This has bugged me for months, just thought XP couldn't read them to show thumbnails.

    Thanks!

In Adobe Bridge you can view any file that Photoshop can open as a thumbnail or as a filmstrip, you can even group the thumbnails or change their size. Now that I think about it though Bridge may only be in CS2 and not CS, my bad.
