Lately, I've been downloading a bunch of files here, and visiting some obscure forums & websites on that account (such as that doom place).

I have Norton Internet Security, and its constantly updating itself, and recently added Windows Defender, and the new IE7 beta.

    Weel, fyi-

Just now, the lil golden globe in the system tray said enabled and looked like always, but when I happened to open the actual Norton control panel, there was a pretty serious alert showing-

the antivirus auto-protect was turned OFF, and the Symantec control panel couldn't turn it back on. On reboot, its shows as on, but who knows? Now I gotta find out whats up & run a full scan, etc.

I don't know why, and am not blaming this site, but mebbe folks should look past the little IS icon in the tray, and check their main control panel regularly... paranoid makin'!

  3. Somebody is much too patient. I would have told them to put someone on that actually knows the product beyond what they read on a computer screen.

I stopped using Norton, but a quick Google turned up some items.
You'll have to read them to see if they'll help you with your situation.

You beat me to the post!

I've learned a long time ago that "If you want something done right........"
Everybody hopefully knows the rest of that saying.

I used to call various tech supports too, and that's why I learned to fix everything
myself. That means reading books, of course, but an even better solution is Google.

Books quickly become outdated, but the info found on the internet is usually current.

Yeah, whenever I used to call the "Tech" guys, it was obvious that they were reading
the script, but it's probably for economic reasons.

Following scripts as a "Helpdesk" employee makes sense to bean-counter employers, but is really just a placebo to justify higher prices to consumers.
Instead of calling a "Helpdesk", it would be easier and cheaper to include a hyperlinked Q & A problem solver on the install CD/DVD (which is basically what the so-called "Helpdesk" is doing). But then you wouldn't be able to charge premium prices for your bloatware with "24 hour software support..."

What I really wanted to ask the guy was 'How did the virus get past Norton in the first place?'
and why I needed an AOL product to do an online scan...

  8. a. you weren't up to date.
    b. you are running an older version.
    c. You are up to date and running a current version and norton just doesn't detect it yet.
    d. It came in through a security exploit and is a nasty form of spyware.

Take your pick of the above. Norton or any other software can not catch everything. I have Norton 2006, and two Spyware programs running as well as bad websites being blocked. I still need to be carefull. When I clean spyware from customers computers I use 11 programs as a base and sometimes specialized cleaners too. Nothing gets it all.

I often see computers with older versions of Norton and Viruses.

One of the things in newer versions is detcetion for more types of things. Last years Norton could find some Spyware but not really clean it out. This years 2006 is better that way.

Remember renewing the software after one year only renews the live update for virus signatures and does not upgrade 2004 to 2006 capabilities for example.

  10. I think BMW should sue Symantec for this.lol

"John Thompson, CEO of Symantec, last month told Silicon.com, "The Norton brand is the BMW of the security world." As such, he said, the company has no plans to offer a low-cost version and likewise will fight to maintain its reputation."

Good luck... Norton products go off in your registry like a frag grenade.
But I must add I have been happily using Norton anti-virus Corp Edition for many years.

Seriously, Norton is like a rootkit - and not just the DRM either. I tell all my clients to stay as far away from Norton as possible. I would sooner go without AV (and, perhaps, a firewall) than use any Symantec product. Fortunately, there are better (and often cheaper) alternatives, so it's never come to that.
