I'm trying to make a copy of a Dual-layer DVD (my car's navigation DVD, they're $$$ so I need to make a backup) and my DVD burner's first try didn't work. It's an LG GWA-4164B

I ripped it just fine with DVD-Decrypter, but burning it with that or ImgBurn won't play in my car. People say that it needs to be bookmarked as a DVD-ROM (versus DVD+R which I guess is the default). When I access this page in the burning software, it just says "Unknown (FAILED)". Can you help? Any other burning software that can do this easily for me?

I'm under the assumption that it's probably a good idea to burn all my DVD's under "DVD-ROM" booktype (versus DVD+R) to improve compatibility with all players. True?

It's my understanding you can't change the DVD-R DL booktype, only the DVD+R DL booktype.

It's also my understanding that navigation DVD's and CD's are very difficult to copy....especially if the unit that the DVD "plays" in is not a DVD "player"....IE...it only accepts navigation discs.

I am on attempt number 5 to copy my Volkswagen navigation CD with no success....and my unit doubles as a normal CD player and MP3/CD player.

Navigation DVD's and CD's do not need to follow the rules set forth by the powers-to-be....they do not need to be compliant in the way that audio CD's and video DVD's need to be.

People have gotten it to work easily once they set the booktype on this vehicle, so I'm hopeful I can get it to work!

I said in my first post that it didn't work. it just says "Unknown (FAILED)"

I guess my drive doesn't allow that.

I could be wrong but my understanding is that most if not all DVD burners that are capable of burning DVD+R DL will set the booktype automatically to DVD-ROM even if that DVD burner does not have the ability to set the booktype with regular single layer DVD+R discs.

So ... are you sure that your DVD+R DL is not already "set" as a DVD-ROM ???

Also you should edit the first post which will allow you to edit the SUBJECT as the SUBJECT still says DVD-R DL

Then use ImgBurn....same program without the decrypting portion....also updated quite often. DVDDecrypter will NOT bitset on my new LG4167B but ImgBurn will.

I have the same burner and every place I have gone on the net with reviews it says that it won't burn DL at all. Sadly I wasted a lot of money trying before I gave up. There is a comment on HP site about the burner not burning DL and they are aware of the problem and trying to find a solution. I am curious about if this is your firs DL that you have tried to burn.

Some people have been successful at changing the firmware but sadly several also caused damage trying.

Mine plays just fine on my PC but none of the discs play past the first hour on any stand alone DVD.

Bottom line is this burner has lots of problems.

If you find a solution... please let us know

If you have Nero CD/DVD Speed (or download it off this site), you can go to Extras --> Bitsetting to change booktype from DVD+R DL to DVD-ROM.

Not sure if it works for all drives.

Bitsetting (i.e. changing the book type) is a feature that has to be supported by the burner. If your burner doesn't support it (which appears to be the case here), then you're S.O.L. regardless of what program you use to do the burning.

That said, I have to say I'm surprised at this. I was under the impression that all +R DL burners supported this feature automatically, without requiring you to do anything special. If you read the burner reviews at CD Freaks, for instance, it's hard to find a burner that doesn't automatically set the book-type to DVD-ROM for +R DL disks. The only difference from one burner to the next is whether they also support this feature for single-layer +R and +RW disks. Some do and some don't.
