I am completely new at this so if I'm asking a really stupid question I'm sorry.

ok I'm trying to back up some movies and used dvd decrytor and dvd shrink 2.3 without any problems, but when I go to burn it using Nero I keep getting a burn failure - says to use
    Dvd +R/RW , DVD -R/RW, DVD+R9

I'm using a DVD-RW (just what I already had) and have used those without any problems for some movies already (also dual layer ones) but the last 2 movies I tried, I keep getting the error bit above.

I've even tried splitting the movie between 2 dvd's and the size of the both was well below the 4.7gb but it still wouldn't burn.

I've put others on the same type (dvd-rw) so don't get it why it wont burn with these movies too ???

    Any ideas ???

Do they burn on a regular DVD- or + R? And a DVD holds about 4.37GB, so as long as you are below that you shouldn't have a problem with size. Shrink knows that and it normally wouldn't go over that number. Have you installed any other burning software recently?

Another option is to use DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn instead of Nero to burn. They work generally better than Nero for burning.

    And welcome to our forums.

I've only ever used dvd-rw and have never had any problems using them before for other backups like photos, myob, word etc

I was trying out the shrink and dvd decrypter and thought all was fine, as I burnt 2 movies without any probs ...but when I went to do it again with different movie (another dual layer one) - it was no go - I thought maybe it was just that particular movie, but then tried it again with another different one and had the same problem. (both of these were more recent movies than the first 2 I tried)

I'm not even sure if the burner takes + ones.

The only thing I've installed since burning the first two was the decrypter as I didn't need it for the first two movies... but it seemed to work just fine ...until it came to burning with Nero -(even though it worked fine before)

Thanks for the welcome this seems like the kind of place I could learn heaps !

    wooooohoooo !

I think I've solved my own problem .....I think there was something wrong with the two blank dvd's I was using - because I tried it again with some other dvds - same format and had no problem with Nero burning at least one of the movies I was trying - haven't tried the second yet though.

other than that all I can think is that there was some kind of glitch in Nero which has resolved itself nicely (and hopefully will stay "fixed")...in any case I have one that works that I couldn't get before !

If you plan on using DVD Shrink a lot, I would consider using DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn to do the burning. Then you don't have to worry about 'Nero' problems.

In general media problems seem to be the most common reason for a burn failure. That's the first thing you want to check, and the easiest to change. From there you go to software problems, then hardware problems.
