DVD backups will not burn

It was suggested by an esteemed member that I post this question to the forum, so here goes:
I have been backing up my grandchildren's DVD collection for the past month or so (yes, they have a lot.) I have been using DVD DeCrypter, DVD FabDeCrypter, Shrink and Nero v66013. I haven't had any problems until recently. Sometimes I get burn failed error messages, other times it will burn, but when playing it, the movie freezes in spots or freezes and won't play any further. I do not have any problem burning CD's. Right now, I have a collection of about 40 coasters. lol
I am using Sony DVD's, and I have three new containers of them. I have used DVD's from all three containers.

You can try using a dvd blank made by somebody else (just to be sure), but it's most likely your dvd burner is dead. If it's a new drive, you can return it. If you've had it for a while, it's time to buy a new one.

It does appear to show a focus/tracking problem. That could be caused by dirt on the lens. You can try cleaning the laser lens, but if that doesn't help, I would consider replacing the burner.

I just burned a backup. It worked fine. I deleted the file that was made for the burn, rebooted, and tried another. I got another coaster. I cleaned the lens and am trying again. I will let you know if it works or not.

The basic programme? Yes. The menu and stuff? No.
Cut your losses. Bin the Lite-On like I did and invest in a NEC or some other writer which has good feedback in these forums.

It could be that your burner is going out...but maybe check this:

You said you have Sony DVDs...but this is what shows as the media code...maybe try burning at a slower speed (if burning at 8x...)? Or try a different brand for a bit?

I bought some Philips and some Maxwell DVD's last night. I am going to try them and lower my burning speed. If that doesn't work, I suppose I will have to purchase a new writer.
