    Hi,

I'm having trouble playing an AVI file and I'd appreciate some assistance. I'm using Windows XP SP2.

When I try to play the file, Windows Media Player gives the following error:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

I've also tried opening the file with ATI File Player, RealPlayer and WinDVD and I get similar kinds of errors.

Does anyone know how I can fix the file and make it play as I'm very keen to watch it?

    Thanks,
    Joe

identify what video and audio codecs you need with gspot or avi2clipboard or avicodec. it usually help to install latest ffdshow, it can decode most video formats.

    or play with vlc.

    Thanks Baldrick,

I installed gspot, avicodec and ffdshow on my computer, but none of them would run, and avi2clipboard said the file was damaged.

When I installed vlc however, I was able to play the clip fine with it.

    Thanks again,
    Joe

Odd... what does VLC say about the file? I wonder if it's actually a different-format movie renamed to AVI.

ffdshow is actually a filter package for use with media players, though, so you can't run it directly.

Try opening it in VirtualdubMod, it will usually tell you if there are any problems and what they are.
