I'm looking for the fastest and easiest way to combine multiple video files into a single movie using an iMac.

The source material is available in either wmv or rm.

Is there any simple solution that doesn't involve re-encoding all the files into another format before joining?

    REAL MEDIA SHOULD DIE!!!

but seriously, run, don't walk, AWAY from real media files,
if you are trying to convert them. Real Media files are like
kleenex, once used(viewed), they aren't good anymore.

as for WMV, make sure they are WM Video 9 and under, and
even that isn't a gurantee. Mr. Softee's DRM is hosing
everything under the sun from music to movies.
Make sure either Flip4Mac or VLC can open and play it,
    befre trying to convert it.
