I asked tis question in avforums.com but no on eknew the answer.

This site is selling U.S dvd players that can play PAL dvd's.
I believe the player origionally could only do NTSC, anyone know how they are doing this?
Would their modifications affect video quality on PAL discs?

You may wanna check out Cyberhome CH-DVD 300 or 320 as they both play PAL and NTSC and are zone free with a hack. I got one from Target a few months back and pretty happy with it for the money (US$30) I paid.

Oh, just checked the link in your msg, Cyberhome is not to hold 400 DVDs, but doesn't require PAL TV to play PAL DVDs.

  3. They usually modify the firmware. When buying a DVD player look for "multisystem" or "built-in PAL to NTSC converter","Code Free" is not good enough. Most PAL DVD players support NTSC(code free) but not the other way around.

Do you think picture quality could be poor or no different to playing on a PAL player?

The U.S. model JVC DVD recorders will play PAL discs without loss of quality. They won't record PAL, but will play PAL and convert to NTSC. Not sure about region code.

There should be no difference if you buy a multi-system DVD player, that player you linked to isn't.

First of all the player you linked to in your first post is designed to be region free and will play NTSC or PAL but will only output the same. In other words it will output NTSC as NTSC and will output PAL as PAL.

What you really want is a DVD player that is region free and can output NTSC as NTSC but also output PAL as NTSC.

There are a variety of models to choose from but one of the best would be the OPPO OPDV971H

At only $199.00 + shipping it is one hell of a DVD player.

If you are on a tighter budget that I suggest the Pioneer DV-393 which can be purchased from HK Flix for $139.95 + shipping. This is the newest Pioneer model and the version from HK Flix has been modified to be region free and do PAL to NTSC. If it is like other older Pioneer models it too will be an excellent choice.

Another good website is 220-electronics as they tend to have great prices. The Pioneer DV-393 is so new they don't have it yet but when they get it the price will probably be a few dollars less than the HK Flix price. They do have the Pioneer DV-383 (the previous model) for only $109.00 + shipping and many have commented on the high quality of that unit.

Personally I use a Lite-On 5005 DVD recorder. It can be made to ignore macrovision and region free, and also plays Pal disks outputting NTSC.

  9. A lot of DVD players play both NTSC and PAL, and in DVD, SVCD, and VCD, and output NTSC. Target sells Daewoo DVD player that typically can play NTSC or PAL and output either NTSC or PAL. This Daewoo player lists at $79.00, and typically goes for $50.00.

Some good players you can easily hack yourself include Philips and Yamaha. They can play NTSC, PAL, and convert one to the other. You have options of getting them as single-disc, 5-disc, or with or without DVD-A and/or SACD. Remember that you get what you pay for! I have a CyberHome CH DVD300 S. Its PAL-to-NTSC conversion has a few issues. There is a lot of flashing, wiggling, and audio/video can get out of synch, but what do you expect for between $35 and $45 anyway.

U.S. player that are able to play PAL are becoming more and more common every day. With a bit of research Americans can usually find a player locally that can play or can be made to easily play PAL discs rather easily. Websites selling or "specializing" in such players have been obsolete for quite a while (like the one you linked to and the one Fucil linked to) should only be used as a last resort. No offense to anyone but...sites like those prey on uneducated or impatient people....in my opinion of course....your mileage may vary...

Depends, but it is safe to assume this type of player will use compromise to make it playable but not go to the expense to make it optimal.

If quality is the goal start at the top and understand all the compromises as prices go down.
