Major:
I'm trying to encode a video I authored on Final Cut Pro. I exported the sequence using Quicktime Conversion "DV Stream." Then I loaded the .dv file into ffmpegx and selected the XVID output. For some reason, the encoding process just shows the blue stripes moving and the actual blue bar showing the progress does not begin.
I've always used this method to encode .dv files and now it doesn't work. The DV file is about 3.5GB but I've successfully encoded .dv files that were over 10GB. My desired end product is XVID 512x384 at 1323kbs, mp3 128kbs, about 20 minutes long.
Here is the outut (I had to cancel the operation before it completed):

Otherwise, is there an alternative method that you can suggest for going from Final Cut Pro through to XVID? The end xvid must be in an .avi container and not .mov because it must be viewable on both PCs and Macs. Again, the method prior to this problem worked but not now.
Your help is appreciated.![]()

Strange, it thinks it is a TS stream. I just tried with a random .dv file and got the correct decoding message,
"Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family
Selected video codec: [ffdv] vfm: ffmpeg (FFmpeg DV decoder)"
Perhaps try to send me a very short clip by using yousendit.com to major4@mac.com so as I can test it.

Major,
I just sent you a .DV sample. I tried encoding that sample and it sort of worked. Maybe there are problems with large .dv files?
Here's the XVID output of the .dv file I sent you:

Major,
I figured out the problem. It seems that the beginning of the .dv file couldn't be read by ffmpegx. In Final Cut Pro, I used a fade-in edit to start the sequence and perhaps that may have been the reason?
Anyway, I opened up .dv in quicktime pro and trimmed one second off the beginning and end and exported it into another .dv file. This new .dv file was opened in ffmpegx and it worked!
I suspect it was a fade-in problem. In any event, thanks.

For the record, I have had a similar problem with video imported through iMovie. After it was encoded and imported into DVDSP, everything would work fine, but upon playback on stand alone players, it would continually hang, needing to have the play key hit repeatedly until it progressed through to the first chapter marker, at which point it played fine. I worked around the problem by adding a dummy marker 10 frames or so in, and writing a script that automatically jumped to the second marker on playback from the beginning. Although a different artifact, this seems like it may be the same general issue.
Perhaps the DV importing mechanism in both FCP and iMovie has an error in the way it writes the initial atom in the QT DV file. Perhaps you could open in an editing program and cut off the first 10 frames or so.
