  1. Hi freinds,
I got this VCD "Ghughie hain te ud ke vakha" but cant make out the protection on it.

I cant clone CD it, nor does it play properly on the PC but runs fine on VCD player.

the most distinguished part is that when i see the folder MPEGAV folder on the root of this VCD its 0 bytes.

Any clue how to copy tihis VCD ?

Have you tried opening that MPEGAV folder and find out what files are in there?

I knew without reading where you were from that your VCD was made in India. We see this kind of question all the time for Indian VCDs. No one has ever been real sure of the type of copy protection used, but it definitely violates VCDs standards.

There was some discussion on the VCD/SVCD forum here about a new way to copy protect VCDs that involved using a binary editor to re-write a file to list an incorrect value for the length of the movie. You might want to look for that thread in the VCD/SVCD forum and see if that helps you any.

To be blunt, India is the only place on earth that uses this type of copy defection, I mean copy protection so honestly, most of us don't have any experience with it. I sometimes buy VCDs as imports from Hong Kong or Malaysia or China if it's a movie I want to see that's not out in the USA but I don't really want to pay DVD prices to see it. I've never seen this kind of copy protection on any of those VCDs. Usually those countries just ask you not to copy the discs. The Indian copy protection does violate VCD standards as I said. I'm guessing that since those VCDs can't be played on PCs and possibly some other devices, that in Hong Kong, etc. they just thought it was more trouble than it was worth to have people complaining about not being able to watch the movie and possibly returning it in anger and it was better to just hope that the piracy doesn't get out of hand.

There are some very knowledgeable people in the VCD/SVCD forum, so if you can get some more info on how this copy protection works (maybe it does involve the binary edit I mentioned earlier), they might be able to suggest ways to copy it.
