Just started getting into virtualdub video editing and i'm a bit confused by the different versions.
Basically what are the differences, advantages, disadvantages, between all the different types ?
Obviously some are 'obvious' but for example does virtualdub have advantages over the others ?
If not then why would people use it when they can use the others.
Just basically wanted to know what some versions can and can't do when compared to each other. Another example is in the description for virtualdubmod where it says it is a unification of several other mods including mpeg2 so why would people use the virtualdub-mpeg2 version when they could install virtualdubmod and possibly have other functions at their disposal ?
Hope this isn't a stupid question - i have searched the forum but didn't find out much

Although there are alot of Virtualdub users on this site, you'd probably be better off asking the producers of these programs at the Virtualdub forum.
http://forums.virtualdub.org/
I have 5 different versions of Virtualdub on my PC right now and I use all of them. It depends what I'm doing which version I use and ease of use and comfort factor in for me also. I rarely use VirtualdubMod because I am more comfortable with the original version and I find that I use MPEG2 alot because it will do what the original does with the addition of MPEG2/VOB support. If 5.1 surround interests you then VirtualdubMod 1.6.0.0 Surround with the Audio-X codec might interest you. -
Had a look there but haven't posted yet.
So far it seems slight differneces - vdubmod adds support for extra file types, slightly different gui, but it isn't being developed anymore which is a bit of a downer. it has support for mpeg2 but then you could use the virtualdubmod-mpeg2 version which is still being developed and has support for wmv (not sure if virtualdubmod has wmv support)
Then there's sync and virtualdub 1.3c which i'm still looking into. i thought i saw somewhere that the way the sync addon works has been incorporated into the current version of virtualdub but not 100% on that.
at the end of the day you can have all versions installed so.... -
One advantage of VirtualDubMod is that you can open files via Avisynth templates. You don't need to create AVISynth scripts (VirtualDubMod will do it for you) for a lot of things.
Also, VirtualDubMod doesn't perform 3:2 pulldown when opening MPEG2/VOB files marked as such. You get the progressive frames right from the MPEG file without having to IVTC.
