I have used TMPGEnc Plus for years and have never had a problem encoding Type1 DV files into DVD-compliant mpeg files. I am buidling a new PC this weekend and will be loading only my most used programs. Well in preparing for the load I found the following bit of information on the Pegasys website:
I have never had to convert my type1 files to type2 and am wondering if I will have a problem when I go to reload? Is it simply a matter of using the DirectShow filters? Is it the VFAPI Plugins?*2 We only support uncompressed AVI and MS-DV Type2 format AVI. Since the ability to encode AVI files using other types of codec depends on the codec environment, we cannot guarantee that it works.
For DV Type 1 format, please convert it to Type 2 using a DV converter. (Some companies distributes very good free DV converters. ) This conversion is generally a quick process.
What allows TMPGEnc Plus to read the Type1 DV files? Does this unknown program degrade the quality of the end video??
Thanks for any and all help.

use the free Canopus DV File Converter and convert to type 2? if youy install a dv codec there isn't any degrading of quality if it allows type 1 to be input. type 2 is less likely to suffer from audio misalignment though.

Thanks for the suggestion. I know about some of the available freeware converters of DV type, but I am trying to minimize the number of steps in my process flow. My DV camcorder goes wildly out of sync if I capture in DV type2. As such I would like to avoid DV type2 all together and instead understand why I have no problems with my installation of TMPGEnc handling type1 DV when the main website specifically states that the software is incompatible with type1 DV.
Anyone have experience with this situation and knows why TMPGEnc Plus may or may not be able to handle type1 DV? It has been so long since I installed the program that I may have installed some plugin that accepts type1, but I do not remember. Any help is appreciated.

I have converted AVI type 1 with TMPG without doing anything special, although about 1 out of 3 times I will get an error message right before the encode, making me start all over. For this reason I capture only in Type 2 now. I have not been able to use the CANOPUS convertor successfully, & besides it makes another huge file, so that isn't a good solution.
Seems to me you will have to experiement or use a different encoder.
