Well, almost all AVI are compressed - like XviD or DivX. Just make sure you have the right codec to decompress the AVI - Use GSpot to find out which.

I suspect if you have the correct codecs then any avi file can be read, but as I don't use it, I can't confirm this.

If you want a cheap, easy to use convertor, look at VSO ConvertXtoDVD. It will take most types of input and produce a fully working DVD. As with all one-click-wonders, there is a trade-off between ease of use and final quality, but this one does better than most, and is much more reliable.

If you want to produce the best possible output for your source, then you need to look at stand alone encoders and other tools.

It depends on what the **** do you mean by "compressed AVI". That's almost an oxymoron.

From your topic "converting compressed avi w/ TsunamiMpeg Video Encoder Xpress" I'm guessing you have TmpgEnc XPress 3. But you aren't being clear what you want to encode to.
You want to encode from AVI to MPEG2? AVI to AVI? Either way, Tmpg Xpress 3 will do it. For AVI to AVI you need to ensure you have the correct codec installed. G Spot or AVIcodec will tell you what codec is needed for your original AVI file.

thanks for all ur feedback. like i said...i am still new and confused but trying to learn. yes, i am trying to convert avi to mpeg2. the reason why i said compressed avi is cause tmpegenc says that it can only convert uncompressed avi, which is like video from dv camcorders. that is why i'm guessing that downloaded clips and videos from the web is compressed. thanks to all... i will try ur suggestions.

Even DV AVI is compressed. I guess what's meant by "it can only convert uncompressed avi" is that without the corresponding codec, and using DirectShow, it can't handle anything besides uncompressed AVI.
