Hello,
Somebody brought me a bulky black PS-2 Model 50004 V10 GH-026.
It was not working as he said.
I opened up the console and found a Mars clone chip inside (TM Semi, FAB-2004).
At least 8 out of the 26 wires had been disconnected and more than likely had short-circuited some other electronic components whilst powered on.
I carefully removed the chip and cleaned the contacts from solder where the wires were originally connected. I examined the PCB, but did not find any cut traces or burned fuses on the PCB.
I then put the console back together, but even though the console turns on (Reset and Power button work) and the DVD door opens fine, there is no display on the TV.
It seems that it sends signal to the TV, as the (RGB-Scart & Composite-RCA) AV video channel comes up, but it’s just a black screen.
I inserted a CD & DVD PS-2 game, but the DVD-ROM does not try to load them.
I checked the PCB again but I didn’t see anything physical wrong or burned on it.
Any ideas what could be the problem?
Can this be fixed, or should I consider that some crucial component was short-circuited with the disconnected mod-chip wires and burned?
Thanks in advance.

This may sound a bit harsh so I'll apologize now. What part of www.videohelp.com sounds like www.ps2repair.com? I'm sorry, but if you wanted answers to this question, wouldn't you want to go somewhere where the participants were PS-2 techs? Maybe a PS2 forum?
I'm stating this more for your benefit than to be difficult. The odds of finding your answer would be greatly increased if you were to post on a site related to your topic.
This is like having car trouble and posting your question at a mountain bike enthusiasts forum. -
Thanks for the link, any other reliable sites / forums for PS-2 mods & repairs, would be appreciated.
Thanks. -

retroborg - I'm afraid I don't have the answer to your question. Sorry! -
double check the o,p,q,r,x,w and v,t,u,s points if these point are bridge that can cause this situation
Also D thru J
Also makes sure there are no solder splatter on the chip that has the vcc in the picture

smearbrick1, I post OT stuff like this myself. I don't expect an answer, but I tend to know who's who on VH and not other sites, and that means a lot to me. It's a free gamble that you may get an answer.

checking your fuses wouldnt hurt but It might just be a simple solder bridge

I was thinking that maybe the Bios is fried?
Concerning the fuses.
Which specific fuses on the 50004 V10 GH-026 PCB, should I check which would be more than likely to be burned in this case?
And if a fuse turns out to be burned, what replacement technique / tip do you propose to efficiently / easily replace them?
Thanks in advance. -
If I do find a burned fuse or two, usually what is their exact value in Ohms in order to replace them with the equivalent fuse?
Somebody suggested that I could replace the burned fuse (If I couldn’t find the equivalent one) with a simple short wire instead and that would be ok. But wouldn’t that be risking the component or IC that was being powered by the missing fuse? If a higher current was to pass through that specific wire, wouldn’t it burn the following component or IC instead of the fuse?
Also, somebody implied that the black screen could be caused by a burned LA-6508 chip. What do you measure to test if the LA-6508 Chip is burned or not?
Are Bios replacements sold separately by the way? I have not seen in any suppliers.
Thanks in advance. -
you've got mail retroborg

I guess I should have worded my post a little better. I was just trying to point out that it would probably be more useful if he were to search a ps2 repair site instead of the off topic section of a video site (where frequently the topics can range from the hottest women to incoherent ramblings.).
Sorry... -
Actually, ps2daddy has provided me with a lot more help concerning PS-2 repairs & modding, than a lot of other PS-2 Repair & Modding forums I visited so far.
He is a very knowledgeable technician.
But feel free to post any other reliable sites / forums for PS-2 mods & repairs.
It would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
