    G'day all
Please help me with this problem.
As soon as I connect to the Internet (Dial up) service "svchost.exe NETWORK SERVICE" goes to 99% CPU usage and nothing works. I have to end the task to get to normal, if I can call that normal. Is there any way I can eliminate that service somewhere? This problem only started after I did a clean install of Windows XP SP1.
    Any help will be appreciated.

    hi,
svchost.exe type files can be good or bad.... on most systems generally you'll find maybe just 2, anthing more should be a red flag..

So for it to be near 90% , in general is that it being task by some other program.....

I suggest... scanning for spyware and virus......to be on the safe side...
then start disableing your startup programs and see when it goes away....... for example... some programs like zone alarm and i believe norton (default settings) will automatically enquire back to there home page....!! so look for that program that causing svchost.... and change the settings.. could be as simple as disabling the automatic update in the program...

It sounds like a virus, but you stated you just have a clean install of XP. The other disc you have used is the dial-up service setup disc, that is the only source of virus, especially if the disc is a copy. Unless you hit a site with virus.

FWIW I have 6 svchost.exe running in the process list and all are idle. Mem usage ranges from 1,024 K to 11,876 K.

A GB file transfer caused one svchost to run 2% CPU.

You could try using Process Explorer from Sysinternals. It will actually tell you what process is using/started the svchost.exe. For example I have 5 instances of svchost.exe running on my PC. One is for wmiprvse.exe, one is for remote procedure call (RPC), one is being used for automatic updates, help, themes, time, and several other processes, one is for the DNS client, and one is for TCP/IP services. You can also find out more of a definition for svchost.exe here.

  6. You got spyware and viruses. Go to start >Run type in msconfig then enter. Look at the startup and services, disable most of the stuff then uninstall anything you see that you don't want. Then go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com and do a full scan, with modem may take about an hour.
svchost is a service that is used to access internet so you would not know which program is connecting to internet. Another way is to use a firewall like zonealarm and don't allow any program you don't want to access internet. If you have installed windows before and have all the programs and drivers I suggest you go for clean install. Trojan horse is not easy to clean out.

We have been hinting at that by describing normal loads and memory.

    G'day guys
Sorry I didn't answered earlier. I am overwhelmed to see so many responses.
I'm sure it is or was a virus of some sort. I run Spybot and found 7 instances of Windows redirect (or something like that) and 1 Alixa. Ewido found 2 bad cookies. CWShredder found a number of infections. too. Kaspersky failed to find anything. I also removed a few entries in Hijackthis.
Please find pics of before and after, of task manager.
I'm going to try the tips given by you guys and see if I get rid of a couple of processes.
Thank you for the help. I'll keep in touch
