  1. After patient help here I'm now trying my first attempt at the new burning approach recommended. But something is not going right.

I successfully made an ISO from my video file folders with ImgToolClassic. I then tried to burn that with ImgBurn. The disc is a +RW which contains a previous DVD I made some time ago, and which played fine in PowerDVD directly beforehand. ImgBurn advised me that 'This disc needs formating before you can write...'. I said Yes. It then started erasing, which is presumably part of formating? But it's been stuck at 0% for half an hour. Occasionally '0% - Erasing Disc...' is replaced by 'Erasing Disc...', but then '0% - Erasing Disc...' appears again. The drive LED is flashing OK, but as far as I know nothing significant is happening. I'll leave it a while longer whle I have breakfast. There's no Abort or Cancel button, so I suppose I'm then going to have to force termination?

Can anyone suggest what might be happening here please?

In case it helps, here's the ImgBurn Log as it stands so far (it's now 07:43):

  3. Thanks. Tried closing program, but it won't let me: "Sorry, you cannot cancel this operation". Tried ejecting, in vain. Forcibly closed ImgBurn viaXP Task Mgr. But still can't eject disc!

Ran DVDDecrypter and tried Tools|Drive|Eject. No dice. Got this:
    "I/O Error!
    Device: [1:0:0] DVDRW IDE 16X A091 (H (ATA)
    ScsiStatus: 0x02
    Interpretation: Check Condition
    CDB: 1B 01 00 00 02 00
    Interpretation: Start/Stop Unit
    Sense Area: 70 00 02 00 00 00 00 0A 00 00 00 00 04 04 00 80 02 7D
Interpretation : Logical Unit not ready, Format in progress"

Finally, used Tools|Drive|Unlock Tray, and, aftre a few attempts I was able to eject manually.

I'll try your suggestions, but anxious to understand why ImgBurn failed.

I've never done an "erase then burn" with any program myself.

I had ImgBurn fail to ERASE a DVD-RW once ... when I ejected the DVD-RW and looked at it ... it had a bunch of ummm fingerprints all over it ... oops!

I cleaned the surface off and then it had no problems ERASING it.

I've also used it to ERASE DVD+RW discs as well.

Never had a problem but that one time due to a "dirty" disc.

I always do the ERASE - FULL option instead of the ERASE - QUICK option.

I find Nero works best for erasing RW discs.

  8. No one with any thoughts on this exasperating problem please?

It's now happening with several of my DVD-RWs and DVD+RWs. Same behaviour as described in detail above. In summary, ImgBurn says disc needs formating, then offers to do it before burning, then starts erasing, which continues at 0% progress for hours until I have to forcibly terminate.

That then leaves me with the problem of how I get that disc usable again. So far, trying half a dozen programs, I've failed.

I'd also like to hear from anyone who understands what 'formating' means please, and how it differs from 'full erasing'. Formating never seems to appear as a menu or tool option in any of my DVD programs.

I use Prassi ONES to burn my RWs, and it erases quite happily. RWs do have a finite life span, and some crap out much sooner than others. Do you have a friend who could try erasing it on their machine ?

  10. Thanks. Unfortunately no other DVD writer in the house, and none easily accessible.

I've only just realised there's a specialist ImgBurn forum, so I've now posted there. I see from searching that a thread on a similar issue arose a couple of weeks ago.
