What are you specifically wanting it to play ? Data DVD is a broad term. A data dvd could contain word documents, pdf files etc, none of which a DVD player is going to understand.

If you want a player that can play back avi and mpg files from data disc, then look for players that are Divx certified, or that state they can play mpg video.

Be aware though that these players will play only specific variants of these codecs, and won't just play any old video that you throw at it.

You mean DIVX compatible DVD Player.

  4. I'm not on firm ground here, as I'm still a novice at all this. But to me a 'data dvd' would simply be one containing files like JPG pictures or MP3 music tracks. Typically burned in say Nero using the Data option. Wouldn't all modern DVD players cheerfully play these, as mine does?

My Pioneer will play jpgs and mp3 (and wma files) from CD or DVD, although it gets confused if you mix them on the same disc. It will also play some mpeg files direct from disc.

My old Pioneer (first generation player) wouldn't play any of these, or even SVCD format discs.

You may find https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers handy. Here you can select what features you want and it will give you a list of DVD Players to look for.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  8. Toshiba 3990 I just picked up to play with states in the manual divx from CDrom only. OTOH as a test I put some Divx and Xvid and MPGs mixed with jpgs on a DVD it failed on the one with Ogg sound, No surprise. Some of the JPGs display and some do not, strange. The Divx 5 files ff/frev fine. the mpgs PAL and NTSC play fine but after a FF or FRev hitting play does not start playing where you hit play. It seems to jump back in the video a fair amount, almost as if the raw mpegs had chapters but of course they don't. Not a problem if you watch all the way through to the end but if playback is interuppted and then you try to go back to a certain point it is a annoying thing.

According to the manual if I'm interpreting it properly it only does NTSC..... I put in a disc I thought was PAL and it played so I need to find one I'm sure is region free PAL and test.

If it plays PAL then I'll be replacing the Living room Apex that doesn't do Divx but does PAL and NTSC to the TV ok.

Overall slightly cheesy feel to the remote, Small unit. DVD Tray seems a little flimsy, a little slow starting to play a selected MPG file. But what I expected for the price. End result looks like it will save me some time and discs. In summary I'll most likely use it for Divx/Xvid and Standard DVDs and not to play raw unauthored mpgs.
