ok so a couple of dvds i have burned (using TMPGEnc DVD Author) start skipping towards the end of the movie.

of course the first thing i thought was that the disc must be scratched. checked it out and the disc is not scratched or dirty.

now i'm thinking maybe the dvd-r's i got are low-quality.. they are dvd-r MINUS, which i will not make the mistake of purchasing again, because i have since found that more dvd players play dvd-r PLUS than MINUS, although most newer dvd players play both.

anyways enough rambling.. dvd-r minus probably has nothing to do with it considering the movies work great until it gets towards the very end.

    any ideas?

Nothing wrong with the DVD-R. I only use low quality blanks to about 4450MB. Works for me.

    Your mileage may vary.

Actually, in my experience, DVD-R media has a slight edge on compatibility in players over DVD+R, unless the burner being used is capable of bitsetting. A DVD+R with booktype set to DVD-ROM seems to have some improved compatibility over both DVD-R and DVD+R.
But - on to your specific problem.
If you are having problems playing your burned media towards the end of the disk, you may have burned the media at a speed too high for the media/dvd burner combination. Problems seem to show up towards the end of burned media because you are then playing material from the outer rim of the media, where the burn speed tends to be maximized.
    I suggest you:
    1. make sure your burner has the latest available firmware - as firmware updates provide updated burn strategies for newer media types.
    2. slow down your burn speed to something mid-range. For example I burn 16x media in my 16x burner at 8x or 4x.
    3. look up your burner, media and player in the "Lists" references to the left. See what is said about what media works best in your burner and plays best in your player - and be guided accordingly.
    4. experiment a bit to see what works best for you.
    5. come back in and post to the "Lists" and share what you learn with others to help them.
