    Hello All

I'm new here so please feel free to slate me if I should have posted this somewhere else. Basically what I want to know is the simplest, fastest method of taking clips from rugby games which I have personally recorded, back into windows movie maker to do a compilation of the best bits.

I recorded the game on a dv camcorder and made dvds of each game using roxio easy cd and dvd creator 6. In hindsight I should have captured the best bits when I was putting the original file onto my computer. I know want to go back and pick out the best bits, i.e. tries, best tackles etc and make a new movie in windows movie maker using clips from 10 games I have on dvd.

Can anyone recommend the easiest (and hopefully cheapest) way of doing this?

    Thanks in advance

    Scott

I don't know about WMM as a tool for this. You could extract the MPEGs with VOB2MPG and use a editor like the freeware Cuttermaran to get your clips out. Or if WMM can handle them, use it.

Then you would need to author them back to a DVD. There is DVDAuthorgui for freeware authoring. Or you might be able to drop the edited MPEGs into the freeware DivxToDVD and process them to DVD that way.

    And welcome to our forums.

    Thanks

So VOB2MPG will turn the VOB files into MPEGs I presume? I think WMM can handle them. Once I make my movie in this I think I can transfer it to Roxio and write the dvd from there?

Yes, that will convert the contents of a DVD to MPEGs. It takes about 8 minutes on my system. You should be able to edit or cut what you want from them. There is no loss in quality from DVD VOB to MPEG. I don't use WMM or Roxio, so you are on your own for that.

Is that for a whole dvd? My games are 80 minutes long each

That was from a DVD file on my hard drive. It will take longer to read it from a DVD drive and convert the VOBs fo MPEG, but it's fairly quick, about the same as ripping a DVD.

To all who want to use Windows Movie Maker:
This program DOES NOT manage .mpg video files, so before putting your DVD .mpgs into it, you must recode them into .avi or .wmv which are the ONLY video files Windows Movie Maker accepts. I suggest using VirtualDubMod or VirtualDubMPEG to recode (or even to edit: explore VirtualDub and you'll be amazed!!!).

Nope that's totally inaccuarate. I have Windows Movie Maker 1 and it easily reads mpg files no problem. - It just doesn't output to mpg.

  10. Even if WMM takes mpeg files, why would one want to use it for this application? Wouldn't he then have to edit the video, output to .avi THEN use another encoder to get it back to DVD compatable mpeg2 files? Seems to me a lot of potential quality loss with all that encoding.

A forum search will show that MPEG-2 support seems to be hit or miss in WMM - I certainly have never had any luck but many others here have not had any problems whatsoever.

VOB2MPG and then try to import the MPEG. If this is not accepted, then open the VOB in virtualdub-MPEG2, get a hold of the Panasonic DV Codec and convert to DV (about 13GB per hour, mind you). This AVI will then open in WMM.

As mentioned, you'll need to output as DV-AVI from WMM, and then use an encoder to convert to MPEG-2 if DVD is your goal.
    If in doubt, Google it.

My roxio program will use the wmv and turn it into dvd format
