I probably posted this before but I don't remember for sure. Is there a way to record hdtv onto mpeg2 on the fly? I don't care whether or not I lose 5.1 I would just want to save the step of downconverting. I really don't mind if I lose anamorphic widescreen either - hardcoded letterbox would be acceptable.

I have a fusion 3 hdtv gold T capture card. I can record beautiful .tp files but takes forever to downconvert. But my analog antenna I'm using to get hdtv is lousy in analog mode so its not worth recording in mpeg 2 normal mode. So is there anyway to record the hdtv stream into mpeg 2 as its playing???? Is that possible?? I'd like it to receive the hdtv signal but record to mpeg 2 for easy burning.

    Any thoughts???

EDIT - I do have the option of recording "native mpeg" on my fusion card but I still have to downconvert the video.

yada313, you might wanna consider getting a stand-alone unit, like a
receiver. I have the USDigital (by Hisense) from Wal-Mart, for $149,
but you can pick one up now, at $129, latest pricing is "clearance".

Because stand-lone units are hardware assisted, they can do the down-
    sizing for you, real-time.

When I do use my hdtv receiver, I use it in a non-standard kind of way,
hacked.. to get a better sharper, clearer and artifact-free AVI. And the
results are near fantastic, .TS-like quality - but this method does require
a slight filter adjustment to bring the video's remaining quality to view.

    or..

    Have you looked into:
** The Mainconcept Encoder should allow you do capture real-time to mpeg.

Several members use this, even with a hardware dv capture device, if that
even matters to you. But I don't remember the exact model number of this
software, but I'm sure that its nearby.. anybody ?
