I was having great success encoding h264 format movies for my PSP with ffmpegX. But, the PSP system update 2.70 cause all previously functioning movies to give an 'This video cannot be played.' error when played.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? I was just starting to appreciate the power and flexibility of fmpegX for PSP video encoding, and the thought of going back to PSPWare for video encoding is really depressing. I have reported the error to major and hope he can solve the problem. If the problem is not solved, does anyone know of a Macintosh based h264 encoding solution for the PSP?

I hope to get back to using ffmpegX for PSP video encoding. This is currently my only use for ffmpegX.

  2. Everyone has this problem on 2.70. Just another Sony weirdness. I'm checking test files and hopefully finding the differences soon.

    Hello,

Another solution could be iPSP which works pretty well as long as you purchase it. The thing is I purchased it but the SN I got didn't work any more when I changed computer and wanted to install it again.
I've no idea whether it works with PSP 2.7 though. Is PSP 2.7 worth it ? Maybe you can get back to PSP 2.0.

  4. I don't think any Mac application works for h264 on 2.7 as of today.

So does that mean that ffmpegX version 0.0.9w also has a problem with 2.7? If so, the release is of no use to me. The only thing I use ffmpegX for is PSP movie encoding.

BTW if you enclose 'PSP name:' (in the Options pane) in single quotes, you can include spaces in the PSP movie name. The ffmpegX documentation (at least the one I saw) says not to include spaces in the PSP movie name.

As far as iPSP goes, I have not been successful in getting any h264 movies out of it. I have been a registered user of that program since almost day one, but gave up on it long ago, because it is THE buggiest OS X program I have ever seen.

If anyone knows how to roll back to PSP system 2.6, I would appreciate any information. This would help me in the interum until major can figure out the 2.7 wierdness. Hurry up Apple and release a widescreen video iPod, so I can use the PSP only for game play.

I just heard today about this new Sony weirdness, of course 0.0.9w does not fix it (or I would be faster than my shadow). I'll research this and hopefully will find something.

The documentation no longer says that, as this has been fixed in 0.0.9w.

  7. I'm having the same problem and while I'm not sure if this helps any or if someone's already noticed this I thought it wouldn't hurt to mention. When I check the info for a H.264 video on my psp, ones I know worked under 2.6, the info is wrong. For every file it says 320x240 768kbps video 128kbps audio regardless of the actual resolution or encoding rate.

Also after updating to 2.7 I did a reformat of my memory card and the H.264 folder name seems to have changed. it's 101ANV01 instead of the 100ANV01 that i used (and had work) under 2.6

I noticed that as well. If you are looking for videos that are MAQXXXXX.MP4 that work on the PSP firmware 2.70, download the PSP Content Pack at the Sony website. http://www.us.playstation.com/Site.aspx?id=104 maybe the videos can be compared to those being encoded to find a solution.

I've managed to create some working AVC files from .VOB files using iPSP.

Yep. Used MacTheRipper to get the VOB file and iPSP to create the AVC file.

My PSP is running Firmware 2.7

  12. As reported by an user, here's a report of other incompatibilities sparked by 2.7 (firm?)ware.

After reading the forum, I tried iPSP and I was successful in creating AVC Files. I didn't like the quality. It is very poor.

Something else I have come across is that I used PSP Media Manager which is for Windows and it does convert movies successfully to AVC format, although not widescreen. I noticed that using Windows and PSPMM, it creates a folder named 200ANV01.

    Well I hope this helps.

I was able to convert a file using PSPvideo9 (Windows) to AVC and it worked fine on my PSP running 2.70. I used the same .VOB file that I used with ffmpegx that was unsuccessful.

I'm new to this forum and had already posted questions regarding this issue at this link:

    Hi Major,

Any luck with identifying any differences between the two apps?

    Thanks,
    Vik

  17. Not much, but I'm going to create some test streams and if anyone can test them, please keep in contact at major4@mac.com

Since I started this thread, and I really miss h.264 encoding, allow me to test your files also. I will email you directly about how to send the files.

    Hoping to resolve this problem.

    Hi Major,

Have you had a chance to create some streams for me to test out?

    Thanks,
    Vic

  25. I did not. But I will do it this weekend.

  26. Just so you know, firmware 2.71 was released yesterday and has the same problem.

You all might want check out pspvc http://pspvc.sourceforge.net
It's AVC files work on 2.71 firmware

It's open source so it should be possible to get it to compile on OSX if you've got the dependencies. Maybe the fink or darwinports people can do it. Or perhaps the code can be compared to see what's different.

  28. I'll check.

  30. Looks like I solved the issue. Working on a ffmpegX update.
