My DVD player could read DVDs and VCDs fine before. But recently when I put in DVDs, it just says 'No Disc'. It can still read VCDs fine.

    What is wrong? Thanks.

One thing that might shake it up is to put a dvd into unit , and turn it off .
Wait 30 second's then turn back on .

This also cure's dvd player's that develope audio sync problem's from rubbish dvd's .

    --------------------------------------------

Before replacing unit , turn it off , remove cover , and use vcr len's wipe's to clean len's .
Return cover , and test unit .

You might want too try this atleast twice , just incase first time wasn't successful , before giving up .

Most of those cd/dvd cleaner's just push dirt and dust about ... and are useless for dvd player's .

Most dont have the brush's up near the boot sector , which is where they should be ... if they are too be effective at any form of cleaning .

And it could be that the DVD laser has failed. VCDs get read with the same laser as audio CDs. DVDs require a different laser. If this is the case, it's best to just buy a new unit. Repairs are possible, but they always cost more than the unit is worth unless it is a very expensive player. If the player is more than 1 year old, it's possible the laser has failed. Try AMD's suggestions and if they don't help, get a new player.

Had a similar experience with my now trashed player: First, it refused to play originals. Pretty soon it started refusing to play my backups.
CD's played fine all along tho.Was about 3 years old when it crapped out. OTOH, it was a good "excuse" to get a new DivX capable player...

I've had 3 players die on me like this, 2 DVD-ROMs, and one burner. Lasers die, often within 18 months on cheapie stuff or heavily used lasers. Better equipment lasts years, but don't expect it to hit decade marks like analog tv sets and VCRs.

I still use my dead Apex .......... to raise my LCD off the desk an extra 3 inches!

The others I took apart and kept all the computer screws.

Who'd like to keep their once hi-tech equipment for a decade? With the speed of r/evolution in the electronics area, you're starting to long for a new model long before even the cheapest stuff is about to die.

Can I refund those lens cleaners after I buy it?

and if I open the cover on my DVD player, is it easy to see where the lens are?

  9. Most players have easy access to the lens for cleaning, just use a q-tip wet with alcohol. While it's open clean the spindle with the same thing.
