i use dvdx to convert dvd to divx avi.
i want to view these divx avi files on my tv so i'm
looking for a FREE program to put .avi files onto DVD/CD
without altering the size of the file.

e.g. i have a movie converted to divx, it is 700mb big and i want to put it on vcd to
    watch on my dvd player.

thanks for any help in advance!

Any burning program can do this, assuming your DVD player can play Divx encode material. Otherwise you are living in fantasy land.

If you want a VCD, encode it as a VCD. 74 - 80 minutes (less than a standard movie runtime) per standard CD. Tmpgenc can do this.

Best option is to get a DivX capable player. Then it's just a matter of burning the AVI as data to CD or DVD.
If that's not an option, conversion of avi to some other format (mpg1 or 2) is necessary, and as avi file size has nothing to do with the file size when converted to other format, you'll get different file size depending on target format.
Generally speaking VCD is smallest, SVCD in between, and DVD biggest.
VCD is 10 MB/ minute, SVCD 15-20, DVD anything between VCD and 80 MB/minute, mostly in the area of 40 MB/minute when going AVI -> DVD.

Best option IMHO is to buy a DVD Burner and just back the original DVD up and watch that.
    If in doubt, Google it.

All the answers are right, here.

If you have the DVD already, why bother converting to DivX? Just back it up to DVD.

Not that we're supposed to discuss this topic but if these are files that you've downloaded from the internet, then you're best option is to buy a $60 Philips DVP642 DivX player and burn your movies as data to either a 700MB CD or put as many as you can fit on a data DVD.

TMPGEnc will convert Divx to VCD(Mpeg1). But you must unlock the VCD template and change the audio from 44 to 48Khz. Just use any authoring software DVDLab or TDA to author to DVD. 1 DVD can hold about 6 hrs of video in VCD format.

At a substantially lower quality and resolution, unless your Divx file is really crap. Sorry, but to me VCD is a very low quality solution.

... especially when the source was DVD, converted to AVI.

If you were going to go the VCD route you'd be better off going from DVD --> VCD directly with something like EazyVCD.
    If in doubt, Google it.

If you have an Asda store nearby (not many of them in Ireland) drop in and get the Dual dvd860 ... it plays divx/xvid and mpeg 4 from cd or dvd as well as vcd/svcd ... also supports mp3 photo cd jpeg etc DD5.1.. DTS and has 2 memory card slots (reads mmc, sd, memory stick etc and others) and can read divx/xvid mpeg4 jpegs etc direct from the memory card ... it also has optical and coaxial outputs to connect it to your surround amplifier (also has analogue connections) ... not had a disc that it won't play ...(although i haven't tried cheap nasty media (princo etc)) ... and the best thing is ... it only costs £39.47 .... a good buy in my opinion

Of course, there is always trade-off between space and quality.

  11. he(?) has made the movie 700mb so the quality in divx isnt going to be great so the switch to vcd wont hurt too much in quality.

IMHO vcd can be reasonable quality if going for higher bitrates, 1850 and using two pass encoding fron a good clean sauce.

divx player saves the pain and aggro of re-conversion

Well, "VCD" @ 1850 is not a VCD, neither is a 2 pass (hence VBR) encode VCD compliant. VCD is CBR 1150 kbps tops - that's it.
