I wish to save the video files on either cd or dvd as a backup, I am thinking of backing them up as "data" files, is this possible? If so, can I backup those files on cd or which way is best?

A video file is no different from any other computer data file, like a Word document, and can be backed up in the same way. CD or DVD doesn't matter - as data carriers, they just have different capacities.

  4. I suspect video files mentioned here are DivX or Xvid etc located on HDD. As mats said, just copy them to CD in ISO mode-1 or to DVD-R in Iso/UDF Mode-1.

If you are talking about VCD or SVCD or DVD_Video disks to be backed up then there are multiple tools and threads here for giving you all the guidance.

Sorry I did not give any more details, I have burnt my video files to DVD and wish to backup the source files themselves [DVD-compliant files].

If any of the files is over 700MB then CD isn't really an option (you'd have to split files). Either way though, just a simple data CD or DVD using Nero or your burning software of choice will be sufficient.
    If in doubt, Google it.
