  1. Ok - I have read thread after thread but I am still confused.

I have a canon s450, it generates avi files - they seem to be "not standard" by default - can't play them in win media player - only in quicktime

Cant open them in camtasia studio, cant open them in windows movie maker, etc.

Any ideas here on what I can do to get these files converted to mpeg or something usable?

    Thank you,
    Allen

If you use VirtualDub, it has a built in MJPEG decoder. Otherwise install one. ffdshow is free and can decode MJPEG.

Huffman table is a run length encryption method. Is canon putting encryption on the video ? I don't think so.
I did not have problem with Canon avi. I converted a few canon 640x480 avi files for friends from ( A610, A520 ) with TMPGenc, to DVD mpeg2, and put them on DVDR.

  7. when i open the file in virtualdub - it says the following:

video codec "panasonic dv codec" is claiming to be able to decompress formats that it does not actually support. This can cause the Windows video codec system to malfunction and may cause applications to crash. Please remove the errant codec or replace it with an updated version from the original vendor.

how do you remove a codec and should i remove it?

    thanks!

See if it's in add/remove programs if you want to remove the Panasonic codec. You can always put it back. It's used commonly for opening and encoding DV files with Virtualdub.

You could try SUPER for conversion of the MJPG to another format. It handles most formats. I've never had any problems opening the AVIs from my Canon 400 still camera in VirtualDub.

  10. You means Canon SD450. I got SD450 avi from the web, and tmpgenc said it is not supported.

I put it thru microsoft movie maker, and export it as DV_AVI ( anythings else will messed up the color ), then put it thru TMPGenc, and produce any mpeg format I want.

    Have fun.

  11. man i am so frustrated right now

i downloaded "morgan codec" - appeared to allow the file to open in virtualdub - saved out an avi - 1.2gig for a file that was 45mb.

then tried making a mpg - it makes it, but wont open it says no codec

    i just dont get it

  12. You have TMPGENC, and Microsoft movie maker is part of XP. I managed to convert a SD450 avi clip into DVD mpeg2. You should able to do the same with the same tools.

Canon avi is compressed. DV avi is lossless compressed. DVD mpeg2 is compressed. I got only 1 to 2 expansion from Canon avi(8mb) to DV avi(16mb).

Panasonic DV is bad. It will accept any FourCC which breaks VfW since the way VfW works is that it checks for something registered for a particular FourCC, then if nothing is found checks to see if anything else will accept. So you may very well have a compatible decoder installed, but Panasonic takes over. There are other DV codecs.

Deleting the vidc entry and the dll should be enough.
