    Hi everyone:

I am adding subtitle to my AVI file, using VirtualDubMod. This means that I will have to use the software's "Full Compression" mode.

Besides DivX 5.2.1 codec, is there any better codec?

    Thanks

Hi, I think for all of those those criteria.

I am working on an AVI file which is a little longer than usual.

I added subtitle and created a new AVI, using DivX 5.2.1. When I converted the new AVI to DVD, the total size exceeded 4.7GB. I had to use DVDShrink to fit it on a single-layer DVD. The video quality suffered because from the orginal AVI file, it already went through 2 encodings: the first encoding when I added the subtitle and the second when I shrank it.

Therefore I am looking for a best possible codec to use when I add the subtitle so that when I shrink the file, the video quality won't be so bad.

dont create a new avi file is best solution -- add subtitles and frame serve to mpeg2 encoder

use a bitrate calculator to calculate bitrate so you dont go to large

And if you frameserve, you can use a lossless codec like Huffy to minimise losing quality.

If you frameserve, you won't even need to use a codec. at all.
    If in doubt, Google it.

With frameserving, each frame is served up raw, giving you lossless quality, but without the need for large intermediate files. You would be better off using AVISynth though.

Thank you for all of your help.

This frameserving is new to me (naturally, since I am a newbie! ). I will spend sometime digest it.

    Cheers
